Rebirth of the Noble Daughter of a High Ranking Family

 Chapter 79:

To turn the tables when in dire straits.

"Just one thing," Ouyang Nuan smiled. "Ultimately, you belong to Madam. I can't make decisions for you."

Lixiang was momentarily stunned, murmuring, "Madam has already given me to Miss..."

Ouyang Nuan looked surprised and questioned her, "Did Madam really give you to me? Is that what you believe too?"

Lixiang immediately understood and called out, "Miss..."

Ouyang Nuan motioned for her to rise and sighed softly, "I know. Madam must have asked you to do something, and it must be related to me."

These words sent shivers down Lixiang's spine. Ouyang Nuan smiled gently, her eyes shimmering with warmth. "I know you've been with Madam for many years, and the bond between you is strong. But now, I am your mistress. Only I can decide your fate. Lixiang, you should understand Madam better than I do. Once you have accomplished what she wants from you, do you know the consequences? She won't just kill you, but your family too."

"But Madam... she promised me... she said she wouldn't harm me..." Lixiang spoke involuntarily.

Ouyang Nuan chuckled softly, "Silly girl, look at what happened to Qiu Yue. Once you're of no use to her, your fate will be even worse than hers!"

Lixiang's sweat poured down, her facial expression almost contorted. Ouyang Nuan continued, "Risking your life to do her bidding is nothing but making wedding clothes for others for free! Can't you see that?"

Thoughts raced through Lixiang's mind. Following Madam, she could preserve her status within the household. But what would happen after the task was done? Would she end up like Madam Gao, killed without mercy?

Following Miss, though she didn't know if she would keep her promise, at least... at least there had never been a maid who disappeared for no reason by Miss's side! Most importantly, if she won this gamble, she could escape these days of fear and anxiety and become a legitimate head wife outside!

The temptation was simply too great! Then the whole family would enjoy prosperity with her... Lixiang's expression began to flicker, her hesitation reaching its peak. Seeing her like this, Ouyang Nuan didn't rush her but gently said, "Once you stepped into my Pavilion, everyone will assume you belong to me. If something happens to me, you'll be the first to die. Do you understand?"

Lixiang suddenly became alert, lowering her head and trembling fingers. Ouyang Nuan smiled at her gently, without rushing her.

Lixiang remained silent for a while. Ouyang Nuan softly asked, "Have you thought it through?"

Looking at her, tears began to well up in Lixiang's eyes, and a tear fell down. She tremblingly took out a bronze box from her sleeve and presented it to Ouyang Nuan.

Ouyang Nuan took the box from her hands, a hint of coldness flickering in her eyes, but her smile remained unchanged. "What is this?"

"Miss," Lixiang knelt down again, her face showing a trace of determination. "Earlier, Madam ordered me to come to the Tingnuan Pavilion. Wang Mama has been pestering me, forcing me to obey Madam's orders." She frowned with indignation. "I refused resolutely. Seeing that her scheme failed, she resorted to threatening my family's lives. Such crude tactics, who doesn't see through her intentions! Today she summoned me again and handed me this bronze box, instructing me to put it in Miss's food and drink. I was afraid I couldn't escape, so I decided to inform Miss of these schemes. That's why I acted submissive. Now there's evidence, you can report it to Grand Madam and Master...

'Submissive? If I hadn't spoken these words, Lixiang would have acted already...' Ouyang Nuan chuckled inwardly, but shook her head on the surface. "No."

Lixiang was startled for a moment, then said, "I sincerely wish to testify for you, Miss!" Testify? What could a maid and a bronze box prove? If Ouyang Zhi had the intention, Madam Lin would have been dismissed long ago. Why is she still thriving today?

"Miss, as long as we overthrow the madam, you will no longer have to suffer like this."

Ouyang Nuan chuckled softly, her laughter tinged with a hint of self-deprecation. In her previous life, she had died unjustly, consumed by countless rage, sharpness, coldness, and hatred. But now, what others saw was a gentle, restrained, graceful, and kind-hearted Ouyang Nuan. Even without wearing a mask, no one could easily see through her thoughts.

"If you were me, what would you do?" she asked with a smile.

"This..." Lixiang hesitated.

Ouyang Nuan's gaze was encouraging. "Speak up, I won't blame you."

Lixiang bit her lip. "Naturally, it's to firmly accuse Madam and make sure she can never harm Miss again!"

"With what accusation?" Ouyang Nuan couldn't help but suppress a smile. "As her personal maid, would anyone believe your words if you were suddenly expelled for making a mistake?"

Lixiang was taken aback, then said again, "Then, we should deal with her the way she dealt with others..."

"And now her brother is the Minister of War. If she were to be harmed without reason, do you think he would just let it go?" Ouyang Nuan continued.

"So... we just watch her step by step harming Miss?!" Lixiang still couldn't give up.

Ouyang Nuan looked at her, and Lixiang involuntarily lowered her head. Indeed, she was afraid of retaliation if she betrayed Madam, which was why she was so determined to strike back at her.

Ouyang sighed softly and helped her up. "Don't worry, I won't let anyone harm you."

Lixiang felt the hands supporting her were as delicate as porcelain, as if made of jade, yet they were also terrifying. She hadn't expected Ouyang Nuan to see through her thoughts so easily, and she involuntarily bit her lip, not daring to say another word.

Ouyang Nuan quickly brought Lixiang and Hongyu back to the courtyard. As they passed by Ouyang Ke, Ouyang Nuan casually glanced at her, but the latter did not raise her head defiantly as usual. Ouyang Nuan keenly sensed something unusual.

The play on the stage had already ended. The troupe leader brought the playbills to invite the madams to choose the next play. Madam Lin flipped through them, showing a lack of interest. She remarked casually, "These are all the same old plays, nothing new or interesting."

Madam Jiang chuckled, "From what you're saying, could it be that you have something fresh prepared to entertain us?"

Madam Lin teased, a mischievous glint in her eyes, "Sister-in-law is truly the sharpest. Nothing gets past you! After sitting for so long, everyone must be tired. Not long ago, I acquired a fine painting and would like to invite everyone to appreciate it. Would you all be willing to join me?" Madam Lin said with a smile.

Madam Su was the first to respond, "If Madam hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed. Indeed, sitting for too long makes one's back ache. It's a good idea to stretch our legs."

Madam Jiang's smile deepened, "What is this good thing that requires all of us to see together? If everyone ends up disappointed, you won't get away with it!"

Everyone laughed, but they all stood up, indicating their willingness to go. Ouyang Nuan smiled at Madam Lin and said, "Since Mother is here to entertain the ladies, Nuan'er can rest assured. Grandmother is still ill, so I'll go back first."

"Alright, I'll be back shortly," Ouyang Nuan said, glancing towards Madam Lin. Madam Lin blinked in surprise, then smiled and said, "I know you're filial, but there's no need to rush. After the guests leave, wouldn't it be better for us to visit together?"

"But..." Ouyang Nuan deliberately showed a hint of hesitation on her face, her eyes fixed on Madam Lin's every expression.

Though Madam Lin remained composed, her eyes betrayed eagerness. She warmly held Ouyang Nuan's hand and said, "Alright, alright. The ladies here are your elders. It wouldn't be polite for you to leave first, would it? Come with us." As she spoke, she glanced at Ouyang Ke, who seemed lost in thought, prompting Wang Mama to give her a gentle nudge. He snapped back to reality, looking at Madam Wang with a puzzled expression.

Madam Lin inwardly cursed at his cluelessness but maintained her smile, saying, "Ke'er, Nuan'er is going to Shou'an Hall."

Ouyang Ke jolted back to attention, involuntarily objecting, "How could this be!" Then, realizing his outburst, he hastily added, "Sister, you haven't seen Hao'er in a while. Come with us to Furui Court."

Emotions are most easily discerned between the lines of one's expression. Ouyang Nuan observed the mother and daughter's demeanor and tone, sensing a subtle atmosphere of intrigue within their brief exchange.

Madam Lin's overly affectionate behavior, Ouyang Ke's bewildered state, and Wang Mama's evident anxiety. What could be the reason behind this? Or rather, what awaits her at Furui Court? Lixiang mentioned that Lin gave her that box, intending to drug her food. From her speculation, it should be for the purpose of clouding her mind. But she had only just sat down, so they should know that Lixiang hadn't had the opportunity to act yet. Why the rush? Or perhaps—have they already changed their plans? She glanced at Lixiang subconsciously, but the latter wore a bewildered expression...

However, in just a brief moment, countless thoughts had already raced through Ouyang Nuan's mind. In the end, they simply turned into a faint smile. "Very well. Please go ahead, Madam."

At Furui Court, the maids had already prepared numerous chairs, neatly arranged in the courtyard. Everyone took their seats accordingly. Madam Lin clapped her hands, and maidservants brought in delicate tea sets, swiftly pouring freshly boiled water into each cup after adding tea leaves. The dry leaves immediately made a soft rustling sound as they absorbed the hot water.

Upon seeing this, Madam Jiang laughed. "They invited us here and yet are so careless. They're even steeping the tea leaves on the spot. What's the reason for this?"

Madam Lin smiled and said, "Sister-in-law, you're not aware. This type of tea needs to be steeped fresh to be at its best!"

Just then, Madam Liao exclaimed and pointed to her tea cup. "Look at this!" Everyone leaned in to carefully examine their tea cups, only to find that the tea was now a clear amber color, and the courtyard was filled with the aroma of tea.

Madam Ke, known for her pickiness, nodded in agreement, saying, "This is the first time I've seen such tea. The fragrance is intoxicating, filling the entire courtyard. Truly remarkable."

Madam Lin smiled faintly and said, "Madam Ke, the fragrance was indeed strong just now. Take another careful sniff now."

At her words, everyone leaned in again, and indeed, the fragrance had changed. Initially intense, it was now delicate and refreshing, reminiscent of orchids in a secluded valley. They couldn't help but express their admiration.

Seeing the joyful expressions on everyone's faces, Lin glanced sideways at Ouyang Nuan's face, only to find her crystal-clear eyes fixed on her. The ambiguous expression took her by surprise, and she quickly forced a smile and turned to Ouyang Ke, saying, "Ke'er, go fetch the painting hanging in my room for everyone to admire."

Ouyang Ke was momentarily stunned but quickly realized, and together with Wang Mama, she went into the room. In no time, she returned cradling the scroll. Madam Lin personally unwrapped the silk-wrapped scroll, carefully untied the golden thread, and slowly unfurled it.

"Could this be... an authentic work by the painting master Zhou Ming from the previous dynasty, 'Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival'?" Madam Jiang exclaimed, getting up to take a closer look.

On the painting, the temple was artfully covered by a mist-like veil, appearing elusive and ethereal, with a dynamic sense of movement. Surrounding the temple were rippling waters, with boats drifting along, their bodies tilting as if swiftly moving forward. A short bridge led through a bamboo path, entering the mountain gate. Faintly visible on the right side of the temple was a winding corridor, gradually receding into the distance, seemingly endless. A stream gushed out from a deep ravine, flowing past bizarre and colorful rocks, splashing water droplets like pearls, as if the viewers could hear the tinkling sound of water.

Madam Jiang nodded in agreement, exclaiming, "Master Zhou Ming's paintings are exquisite, but they are exceedingly rare. There are only a few dozen in the world, most of which are kept in the palace, with very few scattered among the people. I didn't expect that you would have one here." The others nodded in agreement, their eyes filled with envy as they looked towards Madam Lin.

Ouyang Nuan's lips curved into a slight smile. This painting was originally in her grandfather's collection but had fallen into Madam Lin's hands. For the past ten years, she had never seen Madam Lin display it in public, indicating how highly she valued it. Now that it was brought out, there must be some undisclosed reason behind it.

After enjoying tea and admiring the painting, Madam Lin continued, "I have another treasure in my possession—a red coral, three feet tall, transparent and radiant. Since today is such a joyous occasion, let's also share it with everyone."

The guests expressed their admiration. Red corals, born deep in the sea, were extremely rare to obtain, especially one that was three feet tall. It was a rare opportunity to see such a treasure.

Only Madam Jiang cast a sidelong glance. She considered herself to know Madam Lin quite well. Madam Lin was usually very stingy, especially with her precious possessions, and she was always afraid of being deprived of them by others. Why was she being so generous today?

Madam Lin did not immediately instruct anyone to fetch it. Instead, she suddenly asked, "Nuan'er, this tea is rare. Why aren't you drinking it?"

Ouyang Nuan glanced at the emerald green tea and smiled faintly, saying, "Of course, I intend to drink it." With that, she delicately lifted the tea cup to her lips, took a sip, and then used her handkerchief to wipe the corners of her mouth. She chuckled, "Mother is right; indeed, it's a rare and excellent tea." A smile crept across Madam Lin's face, reaching her eyes this time, clearly expressing her satisfaction.

Unbeknownst to her, as Ouyang Nuan touched her lips with the handkerchief, she swiftly spat out the small amount of tea onto it, then promptly concealed the handkerchief in her sleeve. It was a subtle and skillful movement, only observed clearly by Hongyu and Lixiang standing behind her.

Lixiang lowered her head, secretly grateful that she hadn't followed Madam's instructions. Miss Ouyang was deeply scheming, someone who had long been cautious and guarded. How could she be so easily deceived?

"Ke'er, why don't you go and fetch that coral," Madam Lin deliberately called Ouyang Ke by her name. By now, Ouyang Ke had completely regained her composure, her face showing a coy expression. "Mother, your daughter just stumbled and bruised her knee earlier."

This remark elicited laughter from everyone. A young lady who couldn't even walk properly was now complaining about minor injuries. It was indeed quite amusing. Only Ouyang Nuan didn't laugh, as she immediately realized that Ouyang Ke's words held a hidden meaning. And sure enough, she heard her continue, "This time, let sister go instead."

Madam Lin seized the opportunity, smiling as she said, "Since that's the case, let Nuan'er go and fetch it. Go to the inner chamber and bring my coral here."

Ouyang Nuan stood up, appearing somewhat reluctant. "Unfortunately, I haven't seen it in Mother's room before. I don't know where the treasure is kept. Did you put it away, Mother? It would be a hassle to search for it, and everyone would be left waiting for a long time."

Upon hearing this, Wang Mama paused for a moment before quickly responding with a smile, "Madam, the coral has indeed been put away. Miss Ouyang might have trouble finding it for a while."

"Lixiang, you accompany Miss Ouyang to search for it," Madam Lin casually suggested as she lifted her teacup.

Now, whether Ouyang Nuan wanted to go or not, she had no choice but to go. She smiled faintly and didn't refuse. Walking a few steps with Lixiang, she suddenly stopped, turned back, and smiled, "Mother, the sunlight is perfect now, and there's no breeze. Why not have someone bring out my brother here for everyone to see? It would also prevent him from catching a chill later during the banquet, wouldn't it?" Madam Lin was startled inwardly, almost thinking that Ouyang Nuan had seen through everything, feeling suddenly alarmed.

But Wang Mama quickly tugged at her sleeve, and then Madam Lin realized what was happening. She forced a smile and said, "The child must be fast asleep by this hour..."

Ouyang Nuan's smile deepened. "Mother is truly doting on my brother. But we'll be careful not to disturb him," she said.

Madam Liao, who had always favored Ouyang Nuan and had intentions for her to become her daughter-in-law, naturally agreed wholeheartedly. "Indeed, children shouldn't be so delicate. Let's bring him out now for everyone to see," she said, echoing Ouyang Nuan's sentiment. Others chimed in with their approval.

Madam Lin felt anxious inside, but she dared not show it on her face. Originally, if Ouyang Nuan had gone into the inner room alone, she could have attributed the suffocation of Ouyang Hao to her. But Ouyang Nuan was too cautious, refusing to enter alone. This was a problem! Madam Lin's mind churned, almost changing color with panic.

At this moment, Wang Mama gritted her teeth and stepped forward. "Madam, the others are clumsy. Let me and Miss Ouyang go together to bring the young master out," she suggested. With the nursemaid Madam Gao already gone, and the maids inside the room withdrawn, if Ouyang Nuan refused to enter the inner room after seeing that something was amiss, everything would be ruined.

In a flash, Madam Lin understood. She forced a smile and said, "Then I leave it to you, Mama."

Wang Mama nodded, smiling reassuringly. "I understand. Please rest assured, Madam," she said. In that moment, they exchanged a glance that only they understood. They both knew: the critical moment had arrived!

Madam Lin watched as Ouyang Nuan, Wang Mama, and Lixiang entered the room. In her heart, she had planned for Ouyang Nuan to drink the mind-altering potion, in collusion with Su Yulou. Then, when discovered by everyone, Ouyang Zhi would have no choice but to expel this daughter who tarnished the family reputation. However, things went awry when Ouyang Hao was unexpectedly killed by Ouyang Ke.

If it were discovered later that Ouyang Hao died of suffocation, Ouyang Ke would be implicated! For her own sake, Madam Lin had to change her plan on the spot, framing everything on Ouyang Nuan and seizing the opportunity to eliminate her! Fortunately, Lixiang was on her side. As long as Wang Mama claimed that Ouyang Nuan had suffocated Hao, her life would be ruined forever...

Madam Jiang, not understanding the situation, also chuckled, "You spoil this child too much. How can he catch a cold just by being brought out to see?"

"This is what the doctor specifically instructed, and I have no choice!" Madam Lin looked at everyone awkwardly, forcing a smile. "Besides, as you all know, I have an eldest son at home who has never liked Hao'er. I don't want him to feel disgusted by seeing the child." She appeared troubled, perfectly portraying the plight of a stepmother.

Madam Lin was very clever. She knew that by showing weakness and seeking sympathy, she would win some sympathy from the others. People started comforting her, saying, "Madam is already a very good mother. The eldest young master is still young and ignorant. He will get better in the future."

"Indeed, where else could one find such a virtuous and loving mother like Madam? Even a birth mother may not be as caring. The eldest young master is too difficult to deal with."

Madam Lin smiled and said, "Please, stop saying such things. I'm feeling embarrassed now. Besides, Nuan'er has always cherished his younger brother. It's heartbreaking for her to hear all this."

Upon hearing this, everyone nodded in agreement. It was well-known that Miss Ouyang cared deeply for her younger brother. Madam Lin smiled slightly; she wanted everyone to know that Ouyang Nuan was willing to do anything for Ouyang Jue, and more importantly, that Ouyang Jue harbored resentment towards Ouyang Hao!

As the curtains were drawn around them, the room became dimly lit, with the interior now appearing elusive. Suddenly, a gust of wind blew in from the window, dispersing the fragrant aroma that filled the room. The delicate curtains danced vigorously, casting a ghostly atmosphere over the entire room.

Wang Mama chuckled, "Miss, let me find the red coral. Would you please go check if the young master has woken up?"

Ouyang Nuan smiled faintly, "Let Lixiang go find it. Wang Mama, it's still better for you to personally check on Hao'er. After all, I'm just a young girl, and I really dare not touch children..."

Wang Mama's eyes flashed with a hint of coldness. Suddenly, she let out a cold laugh, her heart filled with determination. She shouted loudly, "Help! Someone's been killed!"

The ladies outside were unaware of what was happening inside the room. Upon hearing a scream, they all stood up in shock. Madam Lin was the first to rise, quickly striding towards the room, with the others following suit, albeit in a daze. However, the door was tightly shut. Madam Lin's face showed signs of panic as she shouted, "Wang Mama! Wang Mama! What's happening in there? Come out! Open the door!" After a moment, the door suddenly swung open. Lixiang rushed out in a panic and collapsed at Madam Lin's feet, begging for help. Madam Lin pushed her aside and rushed inside, heading straight for the cradle. "My son!" she cried out uncontrollably, completely abandoning her usual demeanor. "What's happened to Hao'er? Who harmed you?"

She scooped up Ouyang Hao from the cradle, frantic and bewildered. She turned to the maids who had followed, shouting, "Are you all incompetent? Why was no one here watching the young master?" The maids looked on in fear, unsure of what had transpired to cause Madam Lin's frantic behavior.

At that moment, Madam Jiang cried out, "Nuan'er!" The other ladies who followed in saw Ouyang Nuan lying on the ground, a deep wooden hairpin embedded in her left chest. Her complexion was deathly pale, and blood pooled around her. Wang Mama, on the other hand, was covered in blood, her eyes hollow, her face flushed red. She knelt on the ground in a daze, as if completely devoid of consciousness. At her feet, shards of a broken vase littered the ground.

The scene was too eerie and terrifying, leaving everyone stunned. Hongyu rushed forward, shouting, "Miss! Miss! What's happened to you?" Her voice was filled with distress, jolting the previously shocked Lady Liao, who exclaimed, "Quick, fetch a doctor! Hurry!" The maids snapped out of their stupor and scrambled away to find help.

Seeing that the situation was not as expected, Ouyang Ke grabbed Lixiang fiercely. "What's going on? How did this happen?"

Lixiang, already trembling in fear, knelt on the ground and cowered. Ouyang Ke's lips curled into a cold smirk, thinking that this spelled doom for Ouyang Nuan.

But to her surprise, Lixiang continued, "Just now, Wang Mama suddenly went mad. She suffocated the young master and tried to kill Miss..."

"You're lying!" Ouyang Ke was stunned, gripping Lixiang's clothes tightly with a menacing glare. "You're talking nonsense! How could someone suddenly go mad like that?"

Madam Lin, seeing Lixiang turning against them, didn't hesitate. She hurriedly put down Ouyang Hao and rushed over, shaking Wang Mama's shoulders forcefully. "Wang Mama, what's going on? You need to explain!"

But Wang Mama remained wide-eyed, her eyes bloodshot, mouth agape, unable to utter a word.

On the other side, Hongyu had already helped Ouyang Nuan to her feet. Though weak, she was still conscious. She covered the wound on her chest with her hand and spoke slowly, each word laden with pain, "She... she suddenly went mad... killed my brother... and tried to kill me..."

In that moment, all eyes turned towards Madam Lin. Her expression changed abruptly, and she suddenly exclaimed, "Nuan, don't speak nonsense! How could Wang Mama possibly harm you?"

"I...," Ouyang Nuan attempted to speak, but suddenly everything went dark before her eyes, and she nearly collapsed to the ground. Luckily, Hongyu was quick to catch her and steady her.

Earlier, Aunt Li had sensed that something was amiss and had swiftly gone to fetch Ouyang Zhi. As the others looked on in surprise, Ouyang Zhi strode into the room, taking in the scene at a glance. When he saw Ouyang Nuan covered in blood, he was nearly stunned. Rushing forward, he supported her and demanded angrily, "What's going on here?"

Madam Lin couldn't utter a word because only two people could bear witness to the truth. It was evident that Lixiang had already betrayed them, and Wang Mama was now incapable of speaking. Madam Lin felt a surge of fear within her.

Lixiang exclaimed desperately, "Master, Wang Mama suddenly went mad and killed the young master. When Miss tried to stop her, she even attempted to kill Miss with the hairpin!"

"Father, don't listen to her nonsense. She's Eldest Miss' maid and has gone mad, that's why she's spouting nonsense!"

Ouyang Ke's beautiful face contorted with rage.

"No, Master, this servant has served by Madam's side as a maid. This servant would never speak falsely!" Lixiang's words were shocking, "Madam ordered this servant to report every word and action of Miss to her without omission. Although this servant hasn't read the classics, I understand the principle of repaying kindness! Miss has been so kind to this servant, and this servant cannot bear to see her wrongly accused. It's true that Wang Mama suddenly went mad and indiscriminately killed someone. Master, you must help Miss seek justice!"

The entire room was stunned into silence. Madam Lin's porcelain-like face turned icy cold, and she spoke sharply, "You, you dare to spout such falsehoods! Master, Wang Mama has served me for many years, she..."

"Daddy..." Dizziness swept over her, but Ouyang Nuan's thoughts had never been clearer. Her feet felt unsteady, and she collapsed into Ouyang Zhi's arms. "Daddy, save me, someone wants to kill me..."

"Nuan'er!" Ouyang Zhi's brows furrowed deeply. As he looked around at the guests, each wearing a different expression, his heart trembled. He immediately made a decision and commanded sternly, "Guards, arrest Wang Mama this wicked slave! Anyone who dares to intercede will face the same punishment!"

"Master Ouyang, Miss's injuries cannot be delayed any longer..." Madam Liao reminded, and then everyone noticed that Ouyang Nuan's complexion had turned even paler.

Ouyang Nuan felt a tremendous pain in her chest, and everything seemed to spin around her. She could barely stand, and the urgent calls of the people around her echoed in her ears. Through hazy vision, she saw the anxious expressions on the faces of the ladies and young misses, and Ouyang Zhi's face was particularly grim. Deep inside, she felt a profound weariness towards it all, and soon she sank into endless darkness, submerged in boundless water that engulfed her, stealing her breath. The world around her turned blood-red...

Ouyang Nuan struggled desperately, her consciousness gradually clearing, but she couldn't seem to open her eyes. It felt as though she was immersed in icy, bone-chilling water, her entire body freezing cold. Any movement brought excruciating pain tearing through her chest.

In the midst of her confusion, she woke up several times, but each time she lacked the strength to resist and eventually lost consciousness again.

The curtains hung low, and the candlelight flickered, filling the room with a heavy scent of medicine.

Ouyang Nuan took a deep breath. That conspiracy had passed without harm, and now she lay on the bed, knowing those people had no reason to hurt her anymore.

At the moment when Wang Mama screamed, she exchanged a glance with Lixiang, who reacted swiftly, using a vase to violently strike Wang Mama's head. Before anyone else could rush in, she locked the door... It was all Wang Mama's overconfidence that led her to expose her back to Lixiang...

Later, Wang Mama's inability to speak was because she had been forced to swallow the entire box of medicine. And that hairpin... Ouyang Nuan shuddered suddenly, remembering the wooden hairpin. A cold smile formed on her lips. To gain trust, she didn't hesitate to pull out Wang Mama's hairpin and injure herself.

Who would suspect a weak young lady lying in a pool of blood?

Who would believe someone could be so ruthless towards themselves?

At that moment, Ouyang Nuan had no choice. Initially, she didn't know Ouyang Hao was already dead. It wasn't until Wang Mama screamed loudly that she suddenly realized Madam Lin intended to frame her for Ouyang Hao's death! Once everyone believed such a narrative, she and Jue'er would be pushed to the brink of death. Only by fighting back at the last moment could she cut through Madam Lin's scheme!

Outside the curtain, there was a faint movement of figures. The familiar voice of Old Madam Li came softly, "Has Miss awakened?"

"Reporting to Old Madam, Miss is still not fully conscious," Fang Mama replied with a choked voice.

"It's been a whole day... Could it have affected her vital organs?" Ouyang Zhi's voice sounded anxious.

"Don't worry, Master. The doctor said her heart and lungs are not affected, but Miss has a weak constitution. We must not rush the treatment, or it may backfire," Fang Mama explained.

Outside, there was silence for a long time, only the thick scent of medicine lingered. Ouyang Nuan struggled to raise her hand, wanting to pull aside the curtain, but she had no strength at all.

Only Old Madam Li's heavy sigh could be heard, "This wicked slave is truly audacious and reckless. Your wife is also acting out of line. With everyone's eyes wide open, everyone is saying that Madam Wang killed Master Hao and injured Miss Nuan. Despite this, she still shields that old cunning slave..."

A moment of tense silence followed. Ouyang Zhi coldly snorted, "Truly despicable!" It was unclear whether he was referring to the culprit, Wang Mama, or Madam Lin who kept defending her.

Just as Ouyang Nuan was about to speak, she realized her strength was weak, and her voice was barely audible, the pain in her chest making it difficult to speak.

No one outside seemed to notice.

At that moment, a maid hurriedly came in to report, "Bad news, Master! The Old Madam and the Madam of the Marquis Mansion have rushed in... We couldn't stop them."

"What!" Ouyang Zhi and Old Madam Li exchanged glances, their expressions changing drastically. They hadn't informed the Old Madam about Ouyang Nuan's injury, but with so many noble ladies having witnessed it... who wouldn't know? They just hadn't expected the Old Madam to arrive so quickly!

Old Madam Li was taken aback for a moment, then quickly straightened her clothes and hurried out. Shortly after, she greeted Old Madam Ning and Madam of the Marquis Mansion with a smile on her face as they entered the room. Ouyang Zhi noticed Ouyang Jue by Old Madam Ning's side and shot him a fierce glare, but Ouyang Jue lowered his eyes as if he hadn't noticed.

Ignoring Ouyang Zhi's greeting, Old Madam Ning snorted coldly as she walked past him, personally drawing back the curtains to reveal Ouyang Nuan lying pale-faced in bed, her wound wrapped in a white bandage, stained with dots of blood.

The sight struck Old Madam Ning's heart with pain. This was her beloved granddaughter, her cherished treasure, now lying here injured. She turned abruptly, her voice sharp as she demanded, "How could you care for her like this? Are you all blind and deaf? How could you not inform me when Miss Nuan was injured to this extent? Are you all counting on the Marquis Mansion to perish completely?!" Her words were directed at the servants, but Ouyang Zhi's face turned pale in an instant.

Old Madam Ning's eyes were already moist, but she held back her tears. With a thud, Fang Mama knelt down on the ground, crying softly, "Old Madam, it's all Fang Mama's incompetence. I failed to protect Miss Nuan, and I am truly ashamed to face you!"

Old Madam Ning's eyes were also filled with tears as she lamented, "I entrusted my own daughter to your care, and you led her to the brink of death! My granddaughter, you should have cared for her well. But what did you do? You caused her, at such a tender age, to suffer such hardships. You have truly betrayed my trust! You heartless wretch, you deserve to be punished severely!"

Seeing this, Hongyu and the other maids exchanged glances and simultaneously knelt down as well. Almost half of the room, except for Ouyang Zhi and Old Madam Li, were now kneeling.

Old Madam Li, seeing the situation turning unfavorable, feared that Fang Mama might say something she shouldn't, so she hastily interjected, "Fang Mama, you have been with Miss Nuan for so long. You know best how to weigh the importance of things. Please, don't speak without thinking!"

Fang Mama gave her a cold look, her face determined. "Old Madam Ning is right. Fang Mama has raised Miss Nuan single-handedly, always unable to bear the slightest grievance against her. Over the years, Miss Nuan has had no mother by her side and yet she still protected the young master, enduring countless hardships. She is kind and gentle, enduring it all silently, never daring to confide in anyone, forcing herself to smile to avoid worrying you, Old Madam. Despite repeated attempts on her life by these villains, she has always been cautious and patient. But these people clearly want Miss Nuan dead! The doctor said that if her injuries were any deeper, she wouldn't have made it! Old Madam, you almost lost Miss Nuan! You must seek justice for her!" With that, Fang Mama fell to the ground, sobbing loudly.

Old Madam Ning was furious. She rushed forward, grabbing hold of Ouyang Zhi's sleeve. "What is going on here? You must explain clearly! If you can't, we'll take this matter to the Emperor! How dare you, the Ouyang Family, harmed my daughter and now my granddaughter! Is this how you repay kindness?"

Ouyang Zhi was so frightened that he hid behind Old Madam Li, his face turning pale.

"Old Madam, please calm down!" Madam Shen wiped her tears and tried to console Old Madam Ning, while Ouyang Jue went forward to support her, afraid that she might faint from agitation. Seeing his sister injured, Ouyang Jue felt immense pain in his heart, but he could only endure it silently. He knew Ouyang Zhi was cruel and selfish, which is why he had summoned Old Madam Ning.

The others looked on in fear, but Old Madam Ning was not appeased. She glared at Old Madam Li with resentment, her anger overriding her noble demeanor. She exclaimed in a stern voice, "Who dared to hurt my precious granddaughter like this?"

Caught off guard by the sudden arrival of the Marquis's mansion, neither Old Madam Li nor Ouyang Zhi knew how to respond. They were at a loss, and Old Madam Li could only force a smile and appease, "Old Madam, please don't be upset. Let's talk things through calmly."

Old Madam Ning's gaze was piercing, causing Old Madam Li to falter. She felt an unprecedented sense of guilt and anxiety. With the situation having escalated to this point, it was impossible to completely cover up or evade the truth... What should she do now? Old Madam Li's mind was in turmoil.

Madam Li realized that since Wang Mama was Madam Lin's trusted confidante, it would be hard to convince anyone that she acted independently. At this critical moment, the testimonies of the maidservants were crucial. She gave a stern glance to Fang Mama, Hongyu, and others, silently warning them not to speak out of turn. Then, she smiled and said, "Old Madam, all of this was orchestrated by that wretched Wang Mama..."

Before Old Madam Li could finish her sentence, Old Madam Ning's face was already contorted with rage. "That wretched woman? Since she's just a servant, there must be someone behind her instructing her! Who could be giving her orders?"

Ouyang Jue spoke coldly, "Grandmother, it was Mother who sent Sister to Madam Lin's room to fetch something, but Wang Mama took advantage of the opportunity to try to harm her!"

The expressions of everyone present stiffened at these words. It was clear that Wang Mama's actions were orchestrated by Madam Lin to harm Ouyang Nuan! Ouyang Zhi felt irritated, thinking that his son was not helping to cover up the situation and was instead speaking out of turn.

He hurriedly explained, "Grandmother, Jue is still young and naive. Please don't believe him! Wang Mama acted alone in this matter. Think about it, Wanru is after all Hao'er's mother. Even if she wanted to harm Nuan, why would she jeopardize Hao'er's life as well?"

In the eyes of ordinary people, since Ouyang Hao is Madam Lin's biological son, it doesn't make sense for her to instruct Wang Mama to harm Ouyang Nuan, risking her own son's life in the process. Therefore, everyone believed that Wang Mama must have been afflicted by some sort of madness or cursed by ill-fated stars, causing her to act irrationally. Witnessing Wang Mama's frenzied state and the tragic scene of both the young master and Miss lying in a pool of blood, people couldn't help but attribute it to supernatural forces.

Old Madam Ning snorted coldly, "You should ask your good wife about that! What about that wretched woman? How is she being dealt with now?"

Ouyang Zhi was taken aback, his face clouded with a hint of gloom. "Wanru has been protecting her all along. I..."

"You—" Old Madam Ning was so furious that she almost fainted.

Seeing this, Madam Shen hurriedly went forward to hold her hand, speaking softly, "Mother, please calm down. Take it easy. You're getting old and shouldn't be getting so angry..." With that, she and Ouyang Jue helped Old Madam Ning to sit down and rest on the nearby noblewoman's couch. Lixiang quickly brought a cup of hot tea.

Seeing Old Madam Ning's complexion improve after drinking the tea, Madam Shen glanced at Ouyang Zhi and Old Madam Li, who were standing there with grim expressions.

She spoke softly, "Both of you, today we are all family. Why not speak openly? If word gets out that the daughter of a high-ranking official like you, Minister of Justice's daughter, was injured by a servant, and you cannot punish the culprit, wouldn't it be a laughingstock? The only way to calm this storm is to punish the evil servant severely. Old Madam, don't you agree?"

Old Madam Li forced a smile and said, "Madam is right, that's exactly the case." Then, as if swearing an oath, she added, "We will definitely punish this wretched servant!"

Old Madam Ning's anger surged uncontrollably, making it impossible for her to calm down. Now that she saw the people from the Ouyang family, she felt an intense aversion towards them and was unwilling to say another word to them.

Old Madam Li continued to ingratiate herself, saying, "Old Madam, this was just an accident. Nuan'er is obedient and sensible, clever and well-behaved. She is not only your granddaughter but also my own. If you feel distressed, how can I not? I promise you, I will definitely seek justice for Nuan'er! Whatever grievances she suffered today, I will make it up to her in the future. If I fail to do so, you can come and hold me accountable!"

Old Madam Ning stared coldly at Old Madam Li, her gaze piercing her heart.

Madam Shen quickly interjected with a smile, "Old Madam, please calm down. Old Madam has spoken to this extent. Let's discuss it slowly."

"Discuss it slowly? What is there to discuss!" Old Madam Ning's eyes widened, and she spoke fiercely, "Fang Mama, pack up Miss's belongings! Quickly!"

Old Madam Li's heart sank when she heard this, but she pretended to be confused, saying, "Oh, Old Madam, what are you planning to do?"

Old Madam Ning's voice turned cold as she replied, "Take Nuan'er back to the Marquis' residence to recuperate!"

Fang Mama whispered softly, "Old Madam, this doesn't seem quite right. Shouldn't we discuss it with Uncle before making a decision?"

Old Madam Ning, in anger, retorted, "What's there to fear? Nuan'er is my granddaughter. What does it matter if I decide to take her back to recuperate!" She then cast a cold glance at Madam Shen beside her and added, "I'm still capable of making decisions like this."

Madam Shen was taken aback, realizing that this was a test from Old Madam Ning. She quickly persuaded, "Jue'er, you don't need to worry. It's good for Nuan'er to come back with us for some time to recuperate."

Old Madam Li's face showed surprise. "Old Madam, Nuan'er is still injured. How can she be moved so easily?"

However, no one paid attention to her. Fang Mama and others had already started packing up. Madam Shen instructed nearby attendants to gently help Ouyang Nuan up. It seemed they were really preparing to leave.

Ouyang Zhi couldn't help but panic, "Old Madam! Nuan'er is my daughter, she carries the Ouyang surname. What are you doing?"

Old Madam Ning's expression remained stern. "What am I doing? I am still alive and kicking. I cannot just stand by and watch my granddaughter suffer without doing anything. I will take her away. Tomorrow morning, you must send that wicked servant's body to my mansion to apologize. As for those behind her, you need to think about how to deal with them! Otherwise, even if it causes a scene in the imperial court, I won't let it rest!"

Old Madam Li's heart sank. She quickly stepped forward to stop Ouyang Zhi and said with a smile, "Of course! Of course!"

Old Madam Li and Ouyang Zhi escorted them to the door, only to be surprised to see it was Madam Lin herself personally escorting the carriage.

With things having reached this point, they had no power to stop it. They could only watch as the carriage from the Marquis Mansion disappeared into the distance, leaving them feeling helpless. Ouyang Zhi looked back at Old Madam Li in confusion, "Mother, what should we do?"

What should they do? Old Madam Li's expression darkened. "Immediately execute that wicked servant by beating, and send her body to the Marquis Mansion overnight!"

"But what about Wanru?"

"Humph, it's all because of that wretched woman's trouble! She can't even protect herself, yet she wants to protect others!"

"Yes. I'll instruct someone to take care of it immediately!" Ouyang Zhi broke into a cold sweat, and when he looked up, he saw his eldest son, Ouyang Jue, staring at him with icy eyes, filled with resentment as if he wanted to pierce through him with his gaze. Angered, Ouyang Zhi snapped, "You ungrateful son, did you bring them here?"

Old Madam Li, hearing him curse at Ouyang Jue, immediately became anxious. She said spitefully, "Just take care of that wretched woman, but don't curse at my grandson!"

At that moment, Ouyang Jue turned his head, looking in the direction the Marquis Mansion's carriage had departed. Tears unknowingly welled up in his eyes...

The Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Personnel had celebrated the birth of his precious son, but on the very day of the child's full moon celebration, the young master was suffocated to death by a wicked servant. Not only that, the Ouyang family's young lady was also stabbed by the servant while trying to protect her younger brother, her life hanging by a thread.

The Old Madam of the Marquis Mansion was furious and took Ouyang Nuan back to the Marquis Mansion for recovery... This news spread throughout the capital overnight, sparking various speculations. Some said the young master was cursed, as evidenced by the servants going mad around him. Others said his fate was too strong, leading to the downfall of his talented elder sister. Some even accused the stepmother of the Ouyang family of being immoral, allowing the wicked servants to harm her eldest daughter...

This matter even caught the attention of the Grand Princess, who not only sent a royal physician but also dispatched countless rare medicinal herbs...
