Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 84:

Shop

"Big Madam, won't you go and attend to the Old Madam's illness?"

After serving the old lady for a few days, Zhuqing came over to inquire about Lin Yunwan's opinion.

Lin Yunwan maintained her previous attitude, saying, "I won't go."

Anyway, the Lu family dare not provoke her now, so why should she go and invite trouble for herself?

Zhuqing sighed and added, "Lately, Master often tries to drown his sorrows in alcohol. He comes back in the middle of the night."

Lin Yunwan frowned.

How useless.

The men of the Lin family never relied on drinking to solve their problems.

Lin Chang Gong was quietly writing on the side. Lin Yunwan didn't want him to hear unpleasant things, so she told Zhuqing, "Don't talk about these things in the future; it might influence the child."

Zhuqing agreed, and she glanced at Lin Chang Gong. The young master was completely absorbed in his writing, seemingly oblivious to the outside world.

The Chui Si Tang was very quiet, with wisps of smoke rising from the incense burner.

Zhuqing also felt the tranquility.

"The weather is getting colder, almost winter," she remarked, listening to the howling cold wind. She smiled and said to Lin Yunwan.

Lin Yunwan responded with a gentle acknowledgment.

Zhuqing, in a good mood and leaning against a soft cushion, said, "In the past few years at the estate, the thing I dreaded the most was winter. There were no good clothes to wear, and the meals were not satisfying."

Lin Yunwan, unaware of the specifics of Zhuqing's life at the estate, asked, "How did you manage through those times?"

Zhuqing smiled, lowered her eyes, and said, "People always find a way to survive."

She didn't elaborate on how she had endured year after year at the estate.

It's getting late, and Zhuqing feels a bit drowsy. She gets up and says, "I'll be heading back."

Lin Yunwan recalls Zhuqing mentioning the doctor earlier, saying, "The doctor will come tomorrow. If you're really expecting, you won't have to come here in the cold all the time."

Zhuqing expresses her gratitude, saying, "Thank you, madam, for taking care of me."

Before leaving, Zhuqing glanced at Lu Chang Gong. She really wanted a child, regardless of whether it was a boy or a girl. If she could have a child as intelligent and filial as Young Master Chang Gong, she would be willing to accept anything, even death.

As Zhuqing is escorted out by Ping Ye, the latter comes in with a cheerful smile, saying, "Madam, it feels like it's going to snow soon."

So soon?

Lin Yunwan raised her eyebrows and, after calculating the dates, realized that she had been reborn for quite some time. She told Lu Chang Gong, "Before the New Year, you should go to the family school and get familiar with your teachers and classmates. After the holidays, I'll arrange for you to learn from the master, teaching you martial arts with both fists and swords."

Lin Yunwan paused and added, "Starting at the end of the year, it will be quite demanding, so be prepared."

Ten years of diligent study is not a mere saying, especially when combining both literary and martial arts studies. It's even more challenging. Lu Chang Gong, however, was not afraid of hard work and replied, "I'll follow Mother's arrangements."

Lin Yunwan nodded, having some other calculations in her mind, but it wasn't convenient to discuss them in front of Lu Chang Gong. So, she kept those thoughts to herself.

"Bring the needle and thread here," she instructed the maids and continued making winter essentials for Lu Chang Gong, as well as her younger brother.

As the tasks were nearing completion, when Lu Chang Gong was about to leave, Lin Yunwan collected the needles, handed him a pair of gloves, and said with a smile, "Take these, don't be stingy. I've also made knee pads for you, I'll give them to you in a few days."

She patted the cotton and fabric used for the knee pads, all in colors and patterns suitable for his age.

Lu Chang Gong pursed his lips, gave a faint smile, and left.

Just as Lu Chang Gong left, Lin Yunwan discussed with two maids:"After the New Year, Changgong will be nine years old." It was time for Lin Yunwan to start planning for his future.

"Tao Ye, you understand it well. The maidservant attending Young Master Yunyi, you and the madam picked together. Keep an eye on suitable girls of the right age."

She thought to herself, 'Also, the maid that Young Master Qinger liked in my previous life...' She went through it in her mind but didn't dwell on it much. 'If Qing Ge'er still wants to choose that maid, she won't stop him.'

From over at Madam Wei's side, they sent people over, all seeking advice from Lin Yunwan on how to manage the inner courtyard. Currently, Tao Ye was trying to handle it. She went out for a while, answered a few questions she knew about, and admitted when she didn't know.

Lin Yunwan is now only wholeheartedly managing Chang Gong and her natal family.

Just as she was getting tired, Tao Ye had dealt with the people from the Wei family, she came in with a pleased expression, and said, "Madam, someone from the Lin family has arrived!"

Lin Yunwan woke up from her drowsiness and hurriedly asked, "Who has come?"

Tao Ye said it was the steward from the Lin family who had returned.

Lin Yunwan, accompanied by her maids, went to the outer hall to meet him.

"Was selling the shop successful?" she asked, observing the steward's expression.

Steward Lian kept his head bowed, avoiding direct eye contact with Lianyun. He smiled as he bowed and said, "Miss, everything went very smoothly. Here are the deeds and silver certificates. There's also one more thing..."

"What is it?"

He handed a small brocade box to one of the maids.

Steward Lin explained, "Madam guessed right. The relative of the storekeeper Luo indeed wanted to acquire the shop, but he lacked enough money. After scraping together what he could, it still wasn't sufficient. I adamantly refused to yield and resisted him for several days. Eventually, he offered me a family heirloom jade pendant to settle the difference."

"I observed that the quality of the jade pendant is good, so I accepted it for now. I've already had it appraised at the pawnshop, and it is indeed a valuable item. Madam, whether you want to sell it or keep it, it's entirely up to you," Steward Lian said with a nod. There was no reproach from Lin Yunwan; after all, selling the shop at market value within a short period was a challenging task.

She opened the brocade box and remarked, "Indeed, it's a valuable item. However, keeping it serves no purpose for me."

Steward Lian inquired, "Madam, should I make another trip? I can sell the jade pendant for you."

After contemplating for a moment while holding the jade pendant, Lin Yunwan responded, "He claimed it was a family heirloom, although its authenticity is questionable. It wouldn't be right to sell it hastily, especially if it is a genuine ancestral piece."

She opted for a compromise, stating, "Find a larger pawnshop, conduct a live transaction, and keep the pawn ticket. If he wishes to redeem it in the future, I'll provide the pawn ticket for him to do so. If he has no intention of redemption, after two or three years, it will naturally become a forfeited item." This approach wouldn't hinder her from converting it into silver. Steward Lian agreed, deeming it a good idea.

Lin Yunwan handed over the jade pendant to him, along with a significant portion of the silver, instructing him, "Don't tell my mother and younger brother how much silver was exchanged in total. Just say that the larger sum is kept with me, and this is only the money I've set aside for buying medicine for my mother."

Lin Guanshi, reluctant to accept, knew that if the young master found out, he would definitely not allow him to take it back.

Lin Yunwan said, "Take it. During your absence, many things happened at home. Yunyi managed to find five hundred-year-old ginseng roots from somewhere, and I don't even know how much silver we'll need for my expenses and the medicine for my mother."

Lin Guanshi returned to the Lin family early and was well aware of these matters. He smiled and said, "Don't worry about the ginseng. Young Master Yunyi got it from the Huan Prince's mansion."

The Lu family definitely wouldn't have the face to accept it. In the end, the ginseng was returned, but Qi Lingheng handed it over to Physician Li. As for how to use it, that's up to the doctor.

"The Huan Prince's mansion?" Lin Yunwan was somewhat surprised. Why would her younger brother go to seek help from Prince Huan?

"Madam, you don't know..." Lin Guanshi hesitated, and before leaving, he added, "You better ask Young Master Yunyi yourself. I'm afraid I won't be able to explain it clearly."

This left Lin Yunwan with some lingering doubts in her heart.
