Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 64:

Missed Opportunity

After leaving the palace, Qi Lingheng didn't take a carriage but rode a horse.

Afraid and following behind, A'Fu asked, "Your Highness, where are you going?"

Qi Lingheng replied, "To pick up Lord Li and go to the Lin residence."

A"Fu naturally followed along. Once he boarded the carriage, he instructed the coachman, "Let's go."

Having heard Qi Lingheng's words, the coachman steered the carriage, moving towards their destination.

Lin Residence

Lin Yunwan's return was sudden, and by the time she reached the backyard, Lin Yunyi had just caught up.

"Older Sister, why did you come back today?" He didn't expect her to return so soon, considering the letter mentioned she would come back when she had time.

"Where's Mother?"

Lin Yunwan couldn't wait to see her mother. LinYunyi held her hand and hurried towards Madam Lin's courtyard, joyful like a lark. "Mother is applying medicine. Older Sister, Mother said she can see light now!"

When Lin Yunwan rushed in, the maidservant was applying medicine to her mother's eyes.

"Is Yunwan back?" Madam Lin tried to get up from the bed.

Lin Yunwan pressed her down, saying, "You lie down."

Madam Lin grabbed her hand, smiling, "Doctor Li is coming to give me acupuncture. It seems to be effective; I can really see something." Though it was just a faint light, it was much better than the past few years when she couldn't see anything at all!

Lin Yunwan was overjoyed to the point of tears.

However, she dared not cry out loud, fearing it would upset her mother.

Lin Yunyi patted Lin Yunwan's shoulder and whispered, "Older Sister, it's alright. Mother will get better."

Lin Yunwan nodded.

Madam Lin heard the whispered conversation between the siblings and asked with a smile, "What are you talking about? Why won't you let me hear?"

Lin Yunwan chuckled, "We're discussing bringing Lu Chang Gong next time so you can see what he looks like."

Madam Lin quickly asked, "Why didn't you bring him over? I would like to see him."

"He's preparing to enter the Lu family school soon, very busy. We'll have to wait until the next break for him to come and see you," Lin Yunwan explained.

Madam Lin nodded, "His studies are important. I just mentioned it casually. It's okay if he doesn't come."

Lin Yunwan, concerned about her mother's health, inquired about the instructions given by Physician Li Qi.

After listening for a while, she said, "Physician Li Qi is indeed remarkable."

According to him, before the New Year this year, her mother would be able to see figures!

Madam Lin, feeling guilty for potentially burdening her children, said, "It's tough for both of you."

Regarding the family matters, Lin Yunyi takes care of them more since Lin Yunwan is, after all, a daughter who married into another family.

Lin Yunyi came over and said quite casually, "Mother, what's so difficult about this? It's only hard for us if you're unwell."

Feeling even more guilty, Lin Yunwan said, "I have even less to worry about, Mother. I can do far less than Yi'er."

"Don't both of you talk like this," said their mother.

Lin Yunwan looked at the prescription and quickly came up with a plan in her mind.

She discussed with her mother, "There are several precious medicinal herbs that are not easy to buy even with money. Mother, as I mentioned before, I want to sell the shop in Zhongzhou. I have brought the deed with me. Let the household manager handle it for me."

"Yunwan, it's better not to," Madam Lin hesitated. She wanted to cure her eyes, but she didn't want her daughter to spend her dowry.

Lin Yunwan said, "It's not all for buying medicine for you. Didn't I mention opening a scent shop as well?" She tucked in her mother's quilt and told a little lie, "I've actually discussed it with Lady Guo, and she has made some preparations for me. If I back out now, it would be untrustworthy."

"Well, then," Madam Lin reluctantly agreed.

Together with Lin Yunyi, Lin Yunwan went out and gave instructions to the household manager of the Lin family.

She still trusted the people in her own family, and she didn't want the people from the Lu family to know the amount of silver in her dowry.

"Old Steward, sell the shop quickly. Mother needs the medicine urgently, and a lower price is acceptable," she said as she handed over the deed.

The steward took the deed with both hands and replied, "Madam, rest assured. I understand the importance."

Lin Yunwan also reminded him, "The shopkeeper Luo, who manages the shop, mentioned to me before that he has a relative who was interested in buying my shop. However, this happened several years ago, and I didn't agree at that time because I didn't want to sell my dowry. If his relative still has the same intention, you might want to inquire about it when you go to Zhongzhou."

"He is an old acquaintance, and it would be less troublesome to sell to someone familiar."

The steward nodded and said, "Young Madam, I've noted everything. If you have no other instructions, I will go and pack up. The sooner I go, the sooner I'll be back."

"Go ahead," said Lin Yunwan.

Lin Yunyi also cautioned him, "Be careful on your way, safety comes first."

The steward smiled in acknowledgment and quickly left.

As the siblings leisurely walked in the courtyard, Lin Yunwan asked, "Why didn't you tell me that it was Prince Huan who invited Physician Li?"

Lin Yunyi wore a troubled expression, speaking like a little adult, "Elder sister, father's illness has already affected your marriage, and now mother's eyesight relies on me. I've grown up now, and I am not as young as when you first got married. You do not have to bear all the grievances alone anymore."

Lin Yunwan smiled, "Why do you still feel distant from your sister?"

The usually lively Lin Yunyi fell silent. It wasn't about feeling distant; he just couldn't bear to see his sister suffer any more grievances.

Lin Yunwan wanted to inquire about his situation at the academy.

Lin Yunyi spoke first, "Regarding mother's medication, elder sister, you don't need to worry. The shop in your dowry is something father and mother left for you. If you really want to do the spice business in the capital, go ahead. I have a way to treat mother's eye condition."

Given the high cost of those medicines, Lin Yunwan asked, "What's your plan? Tell me first, and if I feel reassured, then I'll entrust it to you."

Lin Yunyi refused to divulge details, only assuring her that he had a plan.

Lin Yunwan inquired about the current situation at home, as she was unaware of the exact amount of silver remaining in the Lin family's accounts.

Lin Yunyi was well-informed about the family's finances and meticulously explained each detail to Lin Yunwan.

"As for the affairs managed by the clan, I haven't interfered much to avoid causing resentment among uncles and cousins. However, when it comes to the gratitude owed to Prince Huan, Old Madam Xia, and Physician Li Qi, we should take action."

"You don't need to worry about Old Madam Xia. The Xia family is hosting a housewarming banquet soon, and I'll send a gift on behalf of the Lin family. As for Prince Huan and Sir Li Qi, you should personally pay them a visit."

"Eldest sister, I already know. Mother has given instructions," Lin Yunwan felt relieved. Fortunately, there was a younger brother at home; otherwise, with father gone and mother's eyesight failing, who would support the family?

Lin Yunyi insisted that she stay for dinner, saying, "Older sister, please eat before you leave."

Lin Yunwan shook her head, "It's getting late. I'll come back another day to visit Mother." Her visit today was primarily for selling the shop to buy medicine for her mother.

Lin Yunyi, understanding his sister's predicament, didn't insist on keeping her. He just told her, "Whenever you want to come back, write to me, and I can take leave anytime."

Though Lin Yunwan agreed outwardly, she still worried about delaying his studies.

Just as Lin Yunwan left, Prince Huan arrived with Physician Li Qi, ready to administer acupuncture for Madam Lin.

Madam Lin, aware that there were guests in the house, recognized the visitor as the same person who had brought the doctor last time.

With thin needles inserted around her eyes, she held Lin Yunyi's hand and asked, "Yi'er, this isn't really your brother-in-law?"

"Uh-huh, Mother, he's Father's student," Lin Yunyi replied.

Madam Lin tugged at the corner of her mouth, saying calmly, "I knew it."

She then smiled again and asked, "Which one of your father's students is he?"

"Your father had too many students, with various private schools and even those in the Imperial Academy. Some I remember, and some I don't. Which school did he attend?"

"Mother, it's Prince Huan. Father taught him when he was the Grand Tutor in the palace, and Prince Huan was just a young prince back then. Do you remember?"

Madam Lin was somewhat surprised.

She smiled and said, "Prince Han, of course, I remember. Your father was quite proud of him back then."
