Rebirth of the Noble Daughter of a High Ranking Family

 Chapter 6:

The Silent Confrontation

The incident of Ouyang Nuan falling into the water and getting injured caused quite a stir, not only for Madam Lin but even Ouyang Zhi came to see her once. Ouyang Nuan's feelings toward her father were equally complex.

When she was in trouble, Ouyang Zhi, her biological father, remained indifferent despite the countless pleas from the maids, he considered his own daughter a disgrace to the Ouyang family and wished she would disappear immediately. However, this was not surprising. Under Madam Lin's subtle instigation and manipulation, she and her father had never been close. Instead, there was only distance and fear.

"Father, I've been unfilial, yet you still personally come to visit." Ouyang Nuan smiled, looking very obedient.

Ouyang Zhi looked at his eldest daughter, seeing her resembling her late mother, with her delicate features reminiscent of her. He suddenly remembered when she was born, he had held her and cherished her.

However, after his wife passed away and his new wife entered the household, this daughter didn't show much affection towards him, which made him lose his fondness for her. He even felt that she wasn't as lively and clever as his other daughter, Ke'er.

Now, seeing Ouyang Nuan looking so frail and pitiful, he realized that she was still his own flesh and blood. Moreover, she had risked her life to save his eldest son. A sense of affection welled up in his heart, and he smiled kindly, saying, "You silly girl, I know you were anxious to save Jue'er, but you also need to take care of yourself. Your illness has worried your mother."

Ouyang Nuan smiled even more gracefully. "It was reckless of me. At that time, I wasn't thinking much, I just wanted to save my brother. However, it caused turmoil at home, with doctors being called and visits paid, which also troubled Father..."

Upon hearing this, Ouyang Zhi suddenly felt that she was very sensible and spoke even more gently, "Still having a headache?"

Ouyang Nuan sniffled and her voice involuntarily took on a hint of coquetry as she said, "It hurts." Pausing for a moment, tears began to fall.

Ouyang Zhi, feeling tender towards her, hugged her tightly and comforted her, "Don't be so reckless in the future. Your brother's life is precious, but if something happens to you, Dad will also be heartbroken, understand?"

Ouyang Nuan buried her face in her father's embrace and nodded vigorously, "Mm!"

Utterly obedient, utterly adorable, utterly endearing, Ouyang Zhi satisfied his paternal instincts and left contentedly. Now that he had reassured his daughter, he needed to go and comfort his wife, who was still worrying about their daughter's health.

Watching his departing figure, Ouyang Nuan smirked inwardly—soon, she would turn him against Madam Lin.

Resting in the room for just three short days, a steady stream of medicinal herbs and tonics were brought in by Madam Lin. Outsiders praised Madam Lin for her generosity and kindness towards her stepdaughter, which greatly annoyed Fang Mama. She complained to Ouyang Nuan about it, but she just smiled faintly, unperturbed by it all.

On the fourth day, Ouyang Nuan was able to get out of bed by herself. After dressing simply, she spoke up, "It's time to pay respects to Grandmother."

Hongyu hesitated, advising, "Miss, your health isn't fully recovered yet. Grandma has already spoken; you don't have to go and pay respects."

Ouyang Nuan smiled gently. Grandmother Li was an important piece on this chessboard; she couldn't be ignored.

"You really don't understand, this young lady should be more active in front of the Old Madam, don't let those small-minded people..." Fang Mama stopped halfway, realizing something, and changed the topic as she looked at Ouyang Nuan's simple attire. "Miss, would you like to wear that big red fox fur cloak?"

Ouyang Nuan thought for a moment before casually saying, "Bring out the crane cloak that Grandmother rewarded me with last year."

Fang Mama nodded enthusiastically and immediately went to the cabinet to retrieve it. She carefully presented the rose-purple crane cloak, embroidered with luxurious peony patterns in golden thread. The hat was adorned with soft fur, making her face appear even more radiant, her features clear and beautiful, unexpectedly stunning.

Madam Lin, the battle is about to begin, and I am eagerly looking forward to it. Ouyang Nuan smiled faintly as she looked at herself in the mirror.

Grandmother Li resided in Shou'an Hall. As she entered the room with the attendants surrounding her, the elderly woman seated on the warm central couch wore a sky-blue silk robe embroidered with patterns of the Five Blessings and Longevity. She had a jade-inlaid autumn fur hat adorned with sable fur, and was engaged in conversation with someone. Upon seeing Ouyang Nuan enter and courteously bow, she smiled warmly.

Ouyang Nuan had barely kneeled down when she was pulled up by someone. Madam Lin smiled gently and led her to Madam Li, saying, "Madam, Nuan'er has come to see you."

"Nuan'er, your mother just told me that you could get out of bed. You've arrived so quickly. Why didn't you rest for a few more days?" Madam Li spoke unusually gently.

She had only just become mobile, and Madam Lin had already come here to report to her grandmother. It was obvious that her intention was to let her grandmother know that she could get out of bed, thus prompting her to wonder why she hadn't come to greet her. Fortunately, she didn't give Madam Lin the opportunity to sow discord, Ouyang Nuan thought to herself.

"I was anxious because grandmother sent people to inquire repeatedly, so of course, I had to come and thank you for your concern," Ouyang Nuan replied.

Pulling Ouyang Nuan to sit beside her, Madam Lin said to Madam Li, "Madam, look at Nuan'er now, her complexion has improved a lot compared to before. This is a blessing in disguise!"

"That's right, thanks to you sparing no effort to send all kinds of delicacies and rare medicinal herbs to her room. With you as her mother protecting her, I can also rest assured," Madam Li added, smiling as she observed Ouyang Nuan.

In her memory, Ouyang Nuan had only reverence and no closeness to Madam Li, her grandmother, and Madam Li treated her granddaughter just as ordinarily. Madam Li's current warmth towards her must be because she had risked her life to save Jue'er. For Madam Li, losing a granddaughter wouldn't matter much as long as her eldest grandson was safe. Ouyang Nuan understood this very well.

"Nuan'er hasn't thanked you yet." She smiled subtly, "Unfortunately, the doctor said I'm too weak to benefit from most supplements, such a pity. Among them, there's a thousand-year-old ginseng, very rare. People often say it's for those with great fortune to prolong their lives. How could I deserve it? I'll have it sent to Grandmother this afternoon."

Madam Li kindly took Ouyang Nuan's hand and patted it, "It's rare to have someone in this family still thinking of this old lady. It's all thanks to your thoughtfulness." With that said, she glanced at Madam Lin, her smile tinged with a hint of coldness.

Madam Lin's radiant smile froze for a moment. Since Ouyang Nuan's injury, she seemed to have changed, becoming softer yet more sharp, with words laced with hidden venom. Intentionally sending the thousand-year-old ginseng to Ouyang Nuan was a calculated move; if she consumed it and suffered harm instead of benefitting, Madam Lin could earn herself a reputation for being generous and caring.

However, she unexpectedly presented it to Grandmother.

This left Madam Lin feeling like she was the one hiding something valuable from her mother-in-law. She tightly gripped her handkerchief, taking a moment to regain her composure.

"How lively it is here!" The curtain moved, and a girl walked in. She wore a brightly colored silk dress with a Mandarin collar, draped in a snow-white fox fur cloak. A colorful glass butterfly hairpin adorned her bun, with long tassels of pearls and jade shimmering, adding to her charming and lovely appearance. Even before she arrived, her sweet voice could be heard, unmistakably Ouyang Ke.

Seeing the face she had etched into the depths of her memory, the one she wished she could chop up, Ouyang Nuan narrowed her eyes but smiled with extraordinary warmth.

Hongyu stood by Ouyang Nuan's side all along, and seeing the smile on her face, she couldn't help but shiver involuntarily.
