Rebirth of the Noble Daughter of a High Ranking Family
Chapter 5:
When the time comes, I'll make sure you're held accountable for it!
"I didn't see clearly, but if I catch the culprit, I'll skin them alive!" Ouyang Jue exclaimed angrily, his eyes burning with fury.
Ouyang Nuan pondered for a moment before asking, "What about the servants and guards who were with you?"
"Today, I was only accompanied by Qingfeng and two guards. We had to go back to the school to retrieve something we left behind, so I sent Qingfeng back alone. On his way back, he ran into a drunken man who accused us of bumping into him and wouldn't let us go. I stayed behind with the guards while Qingfeng took another route back," Ouyang Jue explained. Seeing his sister's increasingly troubled expression, he asked, "Sister, what's wrong?"

Ouyang Nuan didn't answer. Instead, she turned to Hongyu beside her and inquired, "What about the grey-clad servant they caught?"
Hongyu paused for a moment, then quickly responded, "Miss, Madam Lin took the person away when she left, saying she would give him a good lesson."
"Lesson," Ouyang Nuan thought to herself, "likely means silencing that person's mouth!" However, it didn't matter much. If Madam Lin dared to act, she would surely erase all traces cleanly. In the past life, when her brother suddenly drowned, even though her grandmother sent people to investigate vigorously, the ultimate result was just an accident. It showed that Madam Lin was adept at covering her tracks. This time, if it weren't for her sudden appearance, that grey-clad servant wouldn't have been caught for exposing himself. Even if she detained him, without anyone seeing it firsthand and without substantial evidence, it couldn't harm Madam Lin at all.
Hearing that Madam Lin took the person away, Ouyang Jue snorted, and Ouyang Nuan chuckled. "What's the matter with you?" she asked.

"Hmph! That woman can't compare to our grandmother at all. She lacks half of the aristocratic temperament and can't conceal her nouveau riche demeanor. I can't stand her! Sister, please don't be deceived by her!" Ouyang Jue exclaimed with disdain.
"Haha, quite an apt description," Ouyang Nuan thought to herself. However, with so many maids and servants around, some of whom were undoubtedly spies for Madam Lin, it wasn't the time to speak so freely. Ouyang Nuan gently rebuked, "Don't talk nonsense. You've had a long day too. Go back and rest."
"Won't leave! I want to stay here with Sister. I'm afraid that when I open my eyes again, Sister will be gone," Ouyang Jue insisted, his big eyes bloodshot but filled with deep attachment. Ouyang Nuan looked at him with pity, patting his hand gently as she said, "Silly child, Sister won't go anywhere. I'll always protect you. In the future—there's nothing to be afraid of."
Though her words carried profound meaning, Ouyang Jue was too young to discern the depth of affection hidden within them.
"Hongyu, you and the two maids can accompany Young Master back home with lanterns. Just see him off at the door and then come back," Ouyang Nuan said slowly. Ouyang Jue immediately protested, "Sister! I'm grown up now. Don't treat me like a child! From now on, I'll protect you!"
Ouyang Nuan smiled gently, patting his head as she softly replied, "Alright, Sister will wait for that day."
Watching Hongyu escorting Ouyang Jue out, Fang Mama gently advised, "Miss, it's still early. Why don't you rest a little longer?"
Ouyang Nuan shook her head, still half-leaning on the bed, her gaze heavy as she stared outside the door, waiting for something she wasn't sure of. It wasn't until nearly half an hour later when Hongyu returned and reported that Young Master had been safely escorted back to the Songzhu Yuan that Ouyang Nuan finally lay down.
Ouyang Nuan lay in bed, covered with a thick brocade quilt, her eyes fixed on the stone-blue embroidered canopy above her, lost in thought. First, she dealt with Xiaotao, then she saved Ouyang Jue. Given the current situation, Lin Shi must be suspicious of her, but no matter how suspicious she might be, she would never imagine that Ouyang Nuan had been reborn.

As the dawn broke, there came the sound of footsteps and voices from outside, as if a group of people had entered. Ouyang Nuan glanced at Hongyu, who was sitting on a small stool beside her, nodding off. She thought about speaking up but ultimately remained silent. Before long, she heard the rustle of the door curtain, followed by a cough. So she simply closed her eyes, pretending to be asleep.
"Oh, Madam Lin!"
Upon hearing the voice, Hongyu startled awake with a jolt, and upon seeing the visitor, she was taken aback and hastily bowed, but in her confusion, she accidentally knocked over the small stool. Madam Lin remained silent, while Wang Mama, who stood beside her, immediately scolded angrily, "I told you to watch over Miss, but you ended up dozing off and even clumsily causing a mess. How can you serve like this?"
As the voice grew louder, Ouyang Nuan gently shifted her body. Then, a voice filled with concern spoke up, "Wang Mama, if you must reprimand her, do it elsewhere. If you disturb Nuan'er, I'll hold you accountable along with her."
"Indeed, Madam is correct," Hongyu responded hastily.
Ouyang Nuan opened her eyes and saw Madam Lin standing before her. Madam Lin, upon seeing her awake, showed a joyful expression, approached her, and carefully helped her up. She then placed a stone-blue embroidered pillow behind her for support.
"Wang Mama," Ouyang Nuan smiled, "Madam came to see me before dawn? You must have made quite an effort to persuade her, knowing I must still be asleep."
Wang Mama, adorned with gold bracelets on her wrist and pearl hairpins on her head, exuded an air of dignity. Ouyang Nuan couldn't help but recall yesterday's remark about "half the aristocratic demeanor, unable to hide the appearance of a nouveau riche." Indeed, the servant reflects the master. She softened her smile, appearing genuinely moved by Madam Lin's concern.
"Is Nuannuan feeling better now?" Lin inquired.
"I am feeling better, thank you."

"Feeling better, yet still so pale?" Madam Lin's expression darkened. She then turned to glare fiercely at Hongyu and the newly arrived Fang Mama. "Madam has sent people multiple times to inquire, and you both said the doctor assured everything was fine. How can Nuannuan still look so pale? The young master is still young and might not understand, but are you two also clueless? Even if others are clueless, Fang Mama, you should know better. I've sent people to check on her several times. Why didn't you report back? Such negligence!"
Madam Lin's demeanor softened slightly at Ouyang Nuan's gentle smile. "Don't blame them, Mother. Hongyu was about to report, but I was worried it might disturb your rest, so I stopped her. Fang Mama is getting older; I asked her to go rest first. As for Hongyu, I've always taught her manners. It's just at critical moments, she seems to have forgotten everything I've taught her, acting like that disrespectful servant Xiaotao. Hasn't Mother been here for quite some time? Shouldn't there be someone prepared for such occasions?"
Hongyu quickly brought over a brocade stool for Madam Lin to sit on, while another senior maid named Wenxiu brought in a pot of hot tea. Madam Lin was taken aback for a moment, but she quickly composed herself and replaced her expression with one of deep concern. She carefully observed Ouyang Nuan for a while before sighing softly.
"Nuan, I understand your eagerness to save Jue. But you mustn't risk your own well-being like this. Seeing you in such distress truly pains my heart. I wish I could bear the burden for you. If anything were to happen to you, how could I face your mother?"
Ouyang Nuan's smile on her face became even more radiant and sincere. "Mother, you treat Nuan'er so well."
As for 'bearing the burden', there will come a day when I will personally take you to meet my mother. We'll slowly discuss it then.
