Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

Chapter 48:

Regret

"Madam, the garden and the flower hall have been arranged as per your instructions. The only thing left is to bring out the tableware for tomorrow's banquet. Last time, it was when the eldest son returned, and the two young masters were adopted. The cups and plates may have gathered dust, so it's best to clean them today so that they can be used tomorrow." Ping Ye said.

"You've thought of everything." Lin Yunwan raised her hand, indicating for Ping Ye to give the instructions to Yuan Mama.

When Ping Ye handed over the instructions, she added, "They are all made of glass and jade. Please be careful."

Yuan Mama smiled and said, "Rest assured, young lady."

Before leaving, she was still very meticulous, "Madam, the old servant saw that Old Madam Xia and Eldest Madam Lu Jia were strolling in the garden early, and they seemed to be heading towards Madam Wei's direction. Perhaps Madam Wei will send someone to invite you over for a conversation."

"I understand."

After Yuan Mama left, Ping Ye went to find the clothes and jewelry for Lin Yunwan to meet the guests.

Lu Chang Gong finished his meal, put down his chopsticks, and said, "Mother, I'll go back now."

"Why the rush? If Old Madam Xia sends someone to invite, you can go together. I've mentioned the old lady of the Xia family to you before. She's a senior who has a wide range of knowledge, and her younger son, Master Jin San, although ten years older than you, passed the imperial examination three years ago. He's quite remarkable too."

"You haven't interacted much with these guests. Since you have the opportunity, go and see how high the mountains outside are."

Lu Chang Gong was moved and said, "Thank you, Mother, for planning for your son."

Lin Yunwan teased him, "But don't become blind. Blind people don't make good friends anywhere."

This child has always been unable to withstand teasing; he gets shy after just one sentence. Lu Chang Gong pursed his lips and said, "Your son won't go blind." His voice was low, sounding somewhat defensive.

After having an early meal, he said, "I'll go back and change into a different outfit." When he came to see his mother, he always dressed plainly because his mother often wore simple clothes. However, when meeting guests, it was appropriate to dress a bit more formally. With the addition of the jade pendant his mother gave him, he wouldn't lose any face.

"Go ahead," Lin Yunwan said.

She went to the council chamber to handle daily affairs. Half an hour later, someone from Madam Wei's residence did come.

"They have arrived."

Back in the Chui Si Hall, she changed into a new outfit. Since it was a chance to talk, Zhuqing, who was serving her, boldly said, "Cousin is quite skillful. She has even hooked up with Young Master Qing Ge'er. How long has she been staying in the Lu residence?"

Lin Yunwan smiled without responding, choosing not to reveal the secrets behind the scenes to Zhu Qing.

Zhuqing thought Lin Yunwan was unaware of the significance behind this matter, so she said, "I think Cousin wants to become the Madam of the main branch. Madam, you should be on guard! She is not as loyal and trustworthy as I am."

"Why not take this opportunity to drive her away? It would bring peace of mind to everyone. Since it's her own idea, we can just go along with it and avoid any trouble," Zhuqing suggested.

Lin Yunwan replied calmly, "So, you want to help her."

"What do you mean?" Zhuqing asked.

Lin Yunwan smiled mysteriously, "If she wants to become a concubine, then we should fulfill her wish. Being a concubine is the position that will ruin her forever."

By becoming a concubine, she would never be able to fully reunite with Qing Ge'er, and they would forever be in a subordinate position, unable to lift their heads high.

Unless Lu Zhengliu dares to favor a concubine over his wife! But she believed he wouldn't have the courage to go as far as destroying the marquisate for the sake of a mere woman.

Zhuqing was still puzzled.

Lin Yunwan said, "Alright, I'm going to see Madam Wei now. If you want to come, you can join me. If not, you can return to the Yue Xing Ting."

"I'll come," Zhuqing replied.

Zhuqing followed along, deciding not to press further on the matter that Lin Yunwan hadn't clarified. Madam wouldn't be wrong; following her was the right choice.

Just as they were leaving, Lu Chang Gong also arrived after changing his clothes. Yunwan adjusted the accessories at his waist and asked, "Why did you come out in such a hurry?"

Chang Gong touched his nose and replied, "I knew you were going to the meeting hall, so I practiced calligraphy for a while before coming over."

That's why he was delayed. But this time, he didn't get lost in it, and arrived promptly according to the time.

Lien Yunwan teased him, "I didn't say you couldn't write during the day."

Everyone greeted cheerfully, and Lu Zhengliu also arrived. "Lord Heir."

Chang Gong quickly turned around, "Father."

Yunwan calmly said, "Lord Heir."

Lu Zhengliu walked up to her, observed her expression, his lips slightly tensing. "You treat the child well."

Yunwan glanced at him, finding his words peculiar, not sounding like praise.

"Mother asked me to go to her courtyard with you. Old Madam of the Xia Family and Eldest Sister are there," he said.

Yunwan nodded, and the four of them, accompanied by a group of maids, headed to Madam Wei's place.

She deliberately walked alongside Chang Gong and Zhuqing, avoiding proximity to Lu Zhengliu. He seemed to notice and purposely quickened his pace, walking ahead of them.

As they walked farther, he paused to listen to the sounds behind him. Yunwan was chatting with Chang Gong again. He smirked coldly.

She was quite warm towards a mere adopted son.

When they arrived, each gave a proper salute.

"Alright, enough with the formalities. We're all family, feel free," Lady Wei said when they arrived at her place, smiling at Lin Yunwan and Lu Zhengliu.

However, in front of relatives, everyone dared not be too casual. They paid their respects to the elders one by one before taking their seats according to seniority and age.

The people from the first day were present,  but Young Master Xia also hadn't shown up yet.

Old Madam Xia smiled gently and said, "He mentioned there are many female relatives in the backyard and refused to come despite several invitations."

Jia Eldest Madam said, "The youngest brother is the most well-behaved among us."

Lu Yunwan chimed in, "It seems that at tomorrow's feast, Chang Gong will finally get to see the elegance of Third Master."

Lu Chang Gong immediately stood up and said, "I have admired him for a long time." After saying this, he became curious. What kind of person was Xia Jin San that he could surpass even his Uncle Yi?

As he sat back down, the elders had already moved on to other topics.

The women mostly discussed matters related to managing households and educating children.

Old Madam Xia praised, "The child raised by Yunwan truly carries the spirit of the Lu family."

Madam Wei chuckled, "I hope she will have one of her own soon. That would truly embody the essence of the Lü family."

Jia Eldest Madam gave Lu Yunwan and Lu Zhengliu a teasing glance and said, "I've never seen such a well-matched couple before. Both talented and beautiful, if they have a son, he will surely be an outstanding child!"

As the family continued to jest, a thought crossed Lu Zhengliu's mind. If Lu Yunwan were to bear his son, possessing her beauty and intelligence, the child would undoubtedly be extraordinary. He couldn't help but turn his head to glance at her.

However, she remained calm and composed.

For some reason, Lu Zhengliu suddenly felt a twinge of regret. Regret for not agreeing to let Ge Bao'er become a concubine.
