 Chapter 41:

Miss Knows Best

Li Yiniang turned to the stunned Ouyang Zhi, her eyes filled with sorrow and indignation as she said, "Master, just now Madam accused Zhou Yiniang of adultery. You should consider whether she loved Manager Zhang for his character or for his wealth. Although I haven't been here long, I know that Zhou Yiniang has always been a woman of the utmost propriety, especially towards you, showing deep affection. A woman's greatest fear is being falsely accused of such shameful deeds. If you truly believe that the child in her womb is not of the Ouyang bloodline, then why keep her alive? Let me make one thing clear: if she were truly an adulteress, she would never have chosen death. Her death only proves her innocence, but alas, she's already gone. Even if her innocence is proven, what good does it do now?"

Upon hearing her words, Ouyang Zhi's mind was filled with doubt. He looked at Madam Lin, who was brimming with anger, and then at the weeping Li Yiniang. He was truly unsure of who was speaking the truth and who was lying. His usual decisive nature in official matters was now clouded by this tangled family affair, leaving him unable to utter a word.

Ouyang Nuan sighed, seemingly filled with sorrow, as she gently advised, "Since the person is already deceased, what use is there in discussing who is right and who is wrong? Father, there's no point in lingering here. It's better to send word to prepare the garments and coffins. However, we must instruct them to say outside that Aunt Zhou died of illness and avoid any further gossip."

Then, she turned to Madam Lin and said softly, "Father was just angry earlier. Mother, why didn't you try to calm him down? Bringing people here so conspicuously to handle Aunt Zhou's affairs will only sound bad if word gets out! Now that she's passed away, arguing over who's right or wrong disrespects the deceased. Besides, she was bestowed by Grand Secretary; if he were to hear about this misunderstanding, thinking that Father deliberately dealt with Aunt Zhou, it wouldn't be favorable..."

Ouyang Zhi was startled by these simple words. He had been eagerly anticipating the child Aunt Zhou carried, so upon learning that the child might not be of the Ouyang lineage, he was immediately blinded by anger. How could he forget that she was bestowed by Grand Secretary?

Even if there were any issues, they could have been discreetly handled. Now, by causing her death to be known publicly, wouldn't it appear to Grand Secretary as if he harbored some dissatisfaction and intentionally acted out on the person he sent over?

The thought sent shivers down his spine, and he broke into a cold sweat. He turned his anger towards Madam Lin, who had been covertly instigating him to deal with Aunt Zhou all along. "Why didn't you advise me? Why did things have to escalate to this extent?"

Madam Lin hadn't anticipated such a sudden turn of events. She had gone to great lengths to remove Zhou Yiniang, thinking it would make Ouyang Zhi believe that her actions were solely for the benefit of the Ouyang family. However, with just a few words from Ouyang Nuan, whether Zhou Yiniang had committed adultery became irrelevant, and Madam Lin found herself bearing the blame for tarnishing Ouyang Zhi's reputation.

Despite wanting to argue, she ultimately swallowed her pride and said, "Master... It was my hastiness that led to oversight. Rest assured, I will take care of Zhou Yiniang's affairs properly, and this matter will not reach Grand Secretary's ears."

"No need. You take care of yourself! I'm leaving this matter to Li Yiniang to handle!" Ouyang Zhi was exasperated to the extreme, pulling up his sleeves and walking away.

Li Yiniang felt a surge of joy in her heart. She genuinely admired Ouyang Nuan for her ability to change Sir Ouyang's mind with just a few words, even after she had tearfully pleaded for so long without moving him. It was truly remarkable!

Madam Lin watched as Ouyang Zhi walked away without a hint of mercy, seeing all her calculations come to naught. She was seething with anger and felt her blood boiling up, nearly fainting from the rush. Suddenly, a soft hand gently supported her, and a soothing voice said, "Mother, the wind outside is strong. You should go back and rest first. Aunt Li is here to take care of everything. Don't worry, everything will be fine."

Wang Mama quickly assisted Madam Lin away, wearing a strained smile as she said to Ouyang Nuan, "Miss, there's no need for you to trouble yourself. Let me handle it."

Ouyang Nuan smiled gently, like a breeze in March caressing the earth, radiating endless tenderness and charm. "Thank you, Mama," she said softly.

Even the cunning Wang Mama was shaken by this smile, and she hastened to support Madam Lin along with the maid, swiftly departing as if she had seen a ghost.

Li Yiniang wiped away her tears and returned to Ouyang Nuan's side. "Miss, I'll go instruct the servants to handle the funeral arrangements. I'll take my leave for now."

Ouyang Nuan nodded and watched as she left with her alluring figure. Then, she entered the room, where Fang Mama hastily spoke up to deter her, saying, "Miss, this room isn't auspicious. Let's go back!"

However, Ouyang Nuan didn't stop her steps, and walked all the way to where Aunt Zhou lay, her eyes still wide open, staring upward. After a while, she gently reached out and closed Aunt Zhou's eyes...

The next morning, Ouyang Nuan went to pay her respects to the Old Madam as usual. To her surprise, Li Yiniang arrived unusually early. Upon seeing Ouyang Nuan, she immediately made room for her beside the Old Madam.

Ouyang Nuan smiled faintly, as if she hadn't noticed at all that a concubine had overstepped her bounds and sat beside the Old Madam. She naturally took the vacant seat, massaging the Old Madam's shoulders while softly saying, "Grandmother, about yesterday's incident..."

Old Madam Li sighed and said, "I already know. Ah, such a good grandson. I had hoped that after his birth, the descendants of the Ouyang family would flourish, and Jue'er could have a brother. Who would have thought..."

Ouyang Nuan whispered, "Grandmother is right. It's also because of the misfortune of Aunt Zhou, unable to bear Grandmother's kindness. You shouldn't be too sad. Father is in his prime, and in the future, Aunt Li will also be able to bear children for the Ouyang family. By then, with a bunch of children around you, Grandmother, you might find it too noisy!"

Old Madam Li, pleased with these words, smiled and said, "Yue'e, did you hear that? Nuan is urging you to quickly give her a little brother!"

Li Yue'e blushed and laughed, "Grandmother, please don't tease me..."

Old Madam Li smiled, then furrowed her brows. "As for Madam Lin..."

Ouyang Nuan slowly spoke, "I was just about to ask grandmother. Aunt Zhou was pregnant first, and mother was already feeling a bit aggrieved. Besides, now that Aunt Zhou is gone, let's just let this matter go. Continuously pursuing it might disturb our family's peace and harm father's reputation."

Old Madam Li looked at her somewhat unexpectedly. She had thought that Ouyang Nuan would seize this opportunity to ask for punishment against Madam Lin, considering how she and her brother had been oppressed by her in secret. She didn't expect Ouyang Nuan to be so understanding! Old Madam Li couldn't help but feel a surge of compassion. In fact, she hadn't intended to punish Madam Lin severely either. Although Madam Lin was just a concubine-born daughter of the marquis's family, her brother was an official in the Ministry of War. If they were to really enforce family law, it wouldn't be easy to explain to the marquis's household.

"The most sensible child in this household is none other than you." The old madam smiled, patting her hand, then asked her to join her for breakfast. Aunt Li stood by, occasionally serving dishes for Old Madam Li and Ouyang Nuan, and the atmosphere was quite harmonious and pleasant.

While they were eating, the maid Yun Ro suddenly entered to report, "Old Madam, someone from the Marquis of Zhengguo's residence has arrived."
