Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 160:

Chicken Flying and Dog Jumping[1]

"Madam cares for Miss so much, she specially instructed someone to make new clothes for Miss," said Fan Mama, afraid that Yunwan would think too much, adding, "The summer clothes in the mansion, Miss can't be without them. These are bought by Madam herself for Miss."

Xirou had an unpleasant expression on her face. They had encroached upon Miss Lin's dowry, and now they expected gratitude for sending over a few sets of clothes?

Fan Mama thought she was speaking very tactfully, smiling as she continued, "Tomorrow's reception for relatives, Miss must come wearing the clothes Madam gave you."

Yunwan wasn't particularly concerned about a few sets of clothes, asking calmly, "Will there be men from outside at the reception? Would Madam like me to attend?"

"Of course, it's not appropriate! But if Madam wants to introduce a prospective husband to you, then there's nothing wrong with it." Fan Mama tried to smile and said, "Why are you so dishonest, Miss? They are all relatives from your own family; there's no need to be so particular." Approaching closer to explain, she said, "They are all your uncle and aunt from your maternal family, they don't count as outsiders."

Xirou sternly replied, "Watch your words! Are they really Miss's uncle and aunt?" She reminded Fan Mama, "Miss's biological mother was married to Master through proper procedures!" She continued, "Miss is not born from a concubine, she cannot recognize her stepmother's brothers as uncles. Miss Lin has her own uncles!"

Fan Mama took a step back. 'This servant girl is too fierce! If it weren't for Master's indulgence, she would have been punished long ago!' She thought to herself.

She smiled awkwardly and said, "Miss, they are all relatives from your own family. Master has also agreed."

Lin Yunwan nodded and asked Fan Mama, "Is Second Miss also dressed in new clothes to meet the relatives?"

"What?" Fan Mama didn't understand.

Lin Yunwan clarified, "Is Second Miss also like me, wearing new clothes to meet the relatives?"

How can they be the same!

Second Miss is the apple of Madam's eye. There's no need for her to meet those kinds of relatives.

Mrs. Fan also realized the awkwardness of the situation and quickly came up with an excuse, saying nervously, "Second Miss is ill, you know that. She's still in her room and refuses to come out!" She sighed, "So Madam can only ask you to accompany the elders."

"I understand." Lin Yunwan sent Fan Mama away.

As soon as Fan Mama left, Xiruo asked, "Miss, are you going?"

Lin Yunwan smiled, "Do you even need to ask? Let's go, let's go see Second Miss."

"I heard she often starves herself, I'll find something for her to do."

With Xiruo in tow, they went to see Lin Yunjiao.

Lin Yunjiao had locked herself in the courtyard, originally unwilling to see anyone, especially Lin Yunwan.

Before Lin Yunwan entered, she heard yelling from inside the main room: "Tell her to get lost! If she dares to come over, I'll kill her with one stroke!"

Xiruo was afraid that Lin Yunjiao would go berserk inside and hurt Lin Yunwan.

She stepped forward.

Lin Yunwan gently pulled Xiruo aside and said to Lin Yunjiao inside, "Relatives have come to visit. Don't you want to know why Madam doesn't care about your well-being and still wants to entertain guests?"

Suddenly, there was silence from inside.

Lin Yunjiao opened the door, looking truly thin. She wasn't pretending to starve herself; she genuinely had no appetite.

Staring fiercely at Lin Yunwan, she demanded, "Say what you have to say!"

Glancing around, Lin Yunwan chuckled and asked, "Do you want me to say it here?"

A moment of hesitation passed before Lin Yunjiao replied, "Aren't you afraid your maids will overhear?"

Lin Yunjiao, in a displeased tone, said, "Well, come in already!" Reluctantly, she made space for Lin Yunwan.

After entering her room, they had a conversation, the contents of which, no one else knew. When she came out, she took Xiruo back to Bi Xi Tang. Lin Yunjiao didn't speak to anyone for the whole night.

The next day, there was a banquet at home, so Fan Mama didn't come to teach Lin Yunwan as usual.

However, Lin Yunwan changed into a new outfit early in the morning. Although it wasn't one of the sets sent by Madam Zheng, it was still very decent. Madam Zheng was very satisfied after hearing from Fan Mama.

The only thing she wasn't happy about was Lin Yunwan's intention to pay respects to the Old Madam Lin. She told Fan Mama, "The Old Madam dislikes being disturbed. Tell her to refrain from visiting her too often."

Fan Mama was in a dilemma. "Madam, how can I convey such a message? If the Master hears about it, it won't be good. And if it spreads to the two families..."

A major problem was brewing.

The Old Madam's reluctance to be disturbed and the prohibition on the grandchildren paying respects to her were two different matters. Once that accusation was made, no one could handle it.

Madam Zheng was annoyed and snapped, "I just casually mentioned it, why are you arguing with me!"

Fan Mama dared not retort. She muttered to herself inwardly. If she didn't argue back, Madam Zheng might really ask her to deliver the message.

Madam Zheng picked up her teacup, but in her impatience, she accidentally dropped it on the table. The bracelet on her wrist made a clinking sound as it hit the table, and upon inspection, she found it cracked. It was an ominous sign.

She felt increasingly uneasy. Since this stepdaughter returned home, nothing seemed to go smoothly!

"Has the banquet been arranged?"

Fan Mama breathed a sigh of relief, finally getting to the main topic.

She smiled and replied, "Everything has been arranged properly. Madam, you just need to take a look to see."

Madam Zheng didn't want to go over there. It was getting hot, and she needed to change her bracelet... It would be best if she could marry off her stepdaughter. She couldn't lose face in front of her elder sister's family. She wouldn't wear this cracked bracelet again, and she would need to change her hair accessories as well.

"You go first, I'll change my bracelet and then join. Invite my family members as well. Also, send someone to urge the young lady to hurry up."

"Alright."

Fan Mama was eager to leave and promptly departed with her attendants after receiving the instructions.

At lunchtime, Madam Zheng arrived punctually at the Yuanyang Ting[2] in the backyard, but the guests were slow to arrive.

A maid rushed over in a panic and exclaimed, "Madam, something's happened!"

Madam Zheng frowned. What could possibly go wrong at home?

She looked at the maid and asked, "Calm down and tell me properly! Where did Fan Mama take the guests?"

The maid swallowed nervously before saying, "Fan Mama is trying to break up a fight. Second Miss and Madam's sister-in-law are fighting!"

"What are you talking about?"

Madam Zheng paused for a moment, only then realizing that her daughter and her relatives were fighting. How could this be possible?

She hurriedly got up from her seat, grabbed a maid, and asked, "What's going on exactly?"

The maid shook her head, almost crying out of fear. "I don't know either. Madam Fan brought Madame's sister-in-law and her son over. Miss Lin, I don't know where she came from, ran over and took out a pair of scissors to cut..."

Madam Zheng was so anxious her legs felt weak. She pushed the maid aside and rushed over.

When she arrived, she saw Fan Mama pulling people away with the servants. Lin Yunjiao was holding scissors in her hand, her hair was already disheveled, hairpins fell to the ground, and she shouted loudly, "Who do you think you are, daring to wear my things! Take them off!"

"My bed! Why are you sleeping in my bed!"

"Let me go! Let me go! Who dares to stop me!"

Madam Zheng's vision blurred for a moment. She leaned on the maid and said, "She's gone mad! She's gone mad!"

What on earth was this girl saying?

She was merely worried that the mother of the scholar was dressed too shabbily, fearing that her stepdaughter would look down upon them. So, she gave them a few pieces of cloth and some old clothes. As for the guest room's bed, it was just unused bedding from the storage room! How many people had slept on it before!

Madam Zheng's voice trembled, "Quick, pull Miss Lin away from there!"

Amidst her urgency, she didn't forget to ask, "Where is Eldest Miss Lin? Where is she?"

The banquet was arranged for her stepdaughter to meet the relatives of the Zheng family's scholar. How come she wasn't here?

Meanwhile, Lin Yunwan and Old Madam Lin had already arrived at the Cien Temple.

Madam Lin took her to stroll in the bamboo forest and said to her, "When I was young, I loved going out to worship. My parents were strict, and I could only go out when it was time to worship during festivals."

Lanyun Wan listened with her head lowered.

Old Madam Lin held Lin Yunwan's hand and smiled faintly, even praising her, "Fan Mama said you draw very well, and you've learned needlework quickly. I didn't know we had such a clever girl in our mansion."

Lin Yunwan didn't feel happy after hearing this. Her heart sank slightly. Was Old Madam Lin just speaking casually, or was there more to her words?

"It's cooler over there. Let's go and sit." Old Madam Lin led Lin Yunwan over.

With a calm and gentle expression, Lin Yunwan said, "Please walk slowly." In her heart, she wondered if chaos had broken out in the Lin family's second courtyard by now.
