Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 107:

 Setting Fire

“I remember your mother's birthday is approaching. You don't need to stay here to serve me. Go back and spend a few days with your mother,” Lin Yunwan said to Tao Ye in the Buddhist hall.

Tao Ye replied anxiously, “Madam, the servants at home have my older brother and sister-in-law to take care of my Mother. There's no need for me to go back. I should stay by your side.”

These days, Mistress Ge has been watching closely. Madam has also sent Young Master Chang Gong back to study. Tao Ye was constantly feeling uneasy; how could she dare to leave at this time?

Lin Yunwan smiled and said, “Listen to me, go back.”

In the Buddhist hall, candles were also lit during the day. Seeing a few more extinguished, she took a few thick candles and went to replace them.

“You don't need to worry about me. Isn't there an old nun and two young nuns here? Ping Ye will also come over. You can rest assured and go back,” Lin Yunwan reassured.

After thinking for a moment, Tao Ye said, “Then, I'll go back for two days. I'll come back after two days.”

"Pack up the things you brought yourself, so that the inexperienced ones won't take them away from you. You might not be able to find them later," she advised.

Tao Ye had thought about this point early on, she said, "I'll go pack up." After packing a bundle, Tao Ye left.

Seeing Tao Ye leave, Ge Bao'er hesitantly went to the Buddhist hall to serve. It was the only thing she could do, assisting in grinding ink.

"Big Madam, I saw Tao Ye carrying a bundle, it seems like she won't be leaving just for a short while. If you don't mind, I'm willing to stay and accompany you in reciting scriptures and praying for blessings."

Lin Yunwan bowed her head to read Buddhist scriptures, ignoring her.

"If you don't dismiss me, I'll stay."

Ge Bao'er knelt on a cushion, assisting in grinding ink.

It continued this way until dark when the old nun from the hall brought two young nuns to deliver meals. Just then, Lu Chang Gong arrived from the Marquis's mansion. Upon seeing Ge Bao'er by Lin Yunwan's side, he was momentarily stunned, then walked in, addressing, "Mother."

The old nun awkwardly remarked, "I didn't know Young Master was coming; we didn't prepare your vegetarian meal."

Lu Chang Gong responded nonchalantly, "I've already eaten."

He didn't pay much attention to the old nun, keeping his gaze on Ge Bao'er.

The old nun, preoccupied with the vegetarian meal, knowing Lu Chang Gong wouldn't dine here, said, "Madam, I'll deliver the vegetarian meal to your room. The two young ones will come to clean up later."

Lin Yunwan nodded and took Lu Chang Gong back to their quarters for the meal.

Aware of Lu Chang Gong's character, she asked, "Did you really eat?"

Lu Chang Gong rubbed his nose.

Having just finished his studies, he realized it was already dark outside. In a hurry to come here, he indeed hadn't had his dinner yet.

Lin Yunwan said, "If you find the vegetarian meal too plain, just eat whatever you like." She divided the meal into two bowls for him.

The mother and son remained silent. After the younger nun came to clean up the bowls and chopsticks, Lu Chang Gong spoke, "Mother, since Sister Tao Ye is no longer here, your son wants to come and accompany you."

He was not surprised at all that she had sent Tao Ye away. Very calmly, he said, "The ancestral school hasn't started classes yet. Your son can study and practice calligraphy in the temple; you don't need to worry about it affecting my education."

Lin Yunwan held a scroll of scriptures in her hand and raised her head to look at him.

The child's facial features were delicate and charming, but his eyes were exceptionally dark, giving his gaze a resilience beyond ordinary people.

"Chang Gong."

Lin Yunwan closed her eyes and let out a soft sigh. When she opened them again, her gaze was incredibly gentle. "In the future, listen to your uncle in everything. He genuinely cares for you and knows how to plan for your well-being."

"Mother!"

Lu Chang Gong stood up anxiously, wanting to ask something but found himself at a loss for words. Lin Yunwan urged him to leave, "Go back, don't come here for the next few days. I need to go to the temple for prayer and scripture recitation."

Luchang Gong hesitated to leave as Lin Yunwan had entered the temple, kneeling on a cushion, striking the wooden fish, and chanting Buddhist scriptures.

It seemed that his mother wouldn't engage in further conversation with him. After lingering in the corridor for a while, he eventually departed.

Not long after, he noticed Ge Bao'er entering the temple. Luchang Gong, being obedient, decided to leave for the night.

"Big Madam?"

Ge Bao'er had been accompanying her for quite a while, only to discover that Lin Yunwan had fallen asleep. She called out softly, but Lin Yunwan remained undisturbed.

Ge Bao'er left the room, closed the door, and proceeded to search Lin Yunwan's chambers. Despite rummaging through various containers, there was no trace of the jade pendant.

When she came out, the old nun from the temple arrived carrying a lantern, surprised as she asked, "Miss, why did you go to Madam's room?"

Ge Bao'er showed her a thick, large shaw, saying, "Madam fell asleep, and I was afraid she might get cold."

The old nun didn't say much and continued to check the candles around. Once she left, Ge Bao'er took the large shaw and brought it to the temple, covering Lin Yunwan with it while she slept.

"Madam?"

Still no response, she was indeed sleeping soundly.

Ge Bao'er looked at Lin Yunwan with cold eyes, scrutinizing her for quite some time. The fire in her eyes burned more fiercely.

"If you didn't say those things in front of Qing'er..." Perhaps she still couldn't muster the heart to be ruthless.

Ge Bao'er left the temple and closed the door from the outside.

She went to the small kitchen in the temple.

"Hypocritical nun!"

Even though they were provided with vegetarian meals, she knew where the hidden non-vegetarian oil was kept, a large bucket of it!

"I wonder if it's enough to burn down the entire temple..."

For the first time doing something like this, Ge Bao'er felt no fear at all.

She was even a bit excited. With Lin Yunwan dead, no one would spread rumors about her and she would finally have full control over Qing Ge'er.

Where could that jade pendant be hidden?

In the temple,

Lin Yunwan opened her eyes and removed the large coat covering her. She checked the door of the temple, which was indeed locked from the outside.

Lin Yunwan then went to inspect the back window. Normally, it would be securely closed, but she had already opened it in advance.

Taking a candle holder, she dripped wax onto the curtains. As long as she could ignite the flames, the curtains would catch fire.

Lin Yunwan paused briefly, then ignited the curtains.

Regardless of whether Ge Bao'er set the fire, a big blaze was about to happen in the temple.

"Squeak—"

Lin Yunwan heard the sound of the window opening. She turned to look, her eyes widening in surprise.

It wasn't someone else; it was Lu Chang Gong!

How could it be Chang Gong!

"Chang Gong!"

Lu Chang Gong climbed through the window and looked at Lin Yunwan with confusion. He asked, "Mother, why... why are you..."

Why would she burn herself to death?

"Quickly, get out!" Lin Yunwan urged. The fire would soon ignite, and this was no time for idle talk!

Someone outside was urging them quietly.

Lu Chang Gong began to understand.

"Mother, do you... want to leave?" Lin Yunwan pursed her lips, unsure whether to discuss such matters with a ten-year-old.

But now was not the time for such discussions. She frowned and said, "Let's get out first!"

Lu Chang Gong nodded, saying, "I'll escort you out first."
