Jiao Cang "Delicate Concealment" / Are You the One
Chapter 131:
Life in the capital was much busier and livelier compared to Zhenzhou, so time flew by. By the time autumn passed and heavy snow blanketed the ground once more, Mian Tang’s belly had grown immensely, almost as if it were ready to burst.
Cui Xingzhou didn't allow her to socialize outside the mansion anymore, insisting she rest quietly within the residence.
Fortunately, with Cui Fu and Jin'er keeping her company, she didn’t feel too lonely.
However, Cui Fu had not been in a good mood these past few days. The Duke Qing’s household had sent people several times to take Jin'er back, claiming that the Duchess missed her grandson.
When the two families had separated, they had agreed that Jin'er would only be fostered at the Huaiyang residence. The elders of the Guo family, yearning for their grandson, left Cui Fu with no excuse to refuse, so Jin'er had spent a few days back at Duke Qing's household recently.
But after returning from the Duke’s residence, Jin'er had started saying strange things, expressing her fears that her mother might find him a stepfather.
Today, Mian Tang was nestled beside Cui Fu on the warm kang by the lake, writing a letter to her mother-in-law, the Old Princess Consort Chu, who was far away in Zhenzhou.
Meanwhile, Jin'er was out on the lake, skating on the ice with two young servants and a maid. However, while playing, he unexpectedly threw a tantrum and fell off his sled, fuming as he stomped back inside.
As soon as he entered, the little boy rushed into Cui Fu's arms, tears brimming in her eyes. “Mother, I don’t want the sled anymore, and you’re not allowed to talk to Uncle Li!”
Since the poetry society had formed, Li Guangcai had often come to the small West Garden. Over time, he and Cui Fu had rekindled some of their childhood friendship.
Li Guangcai didn’t hide his intentions too well, frequently bringing gifts for Cui Fu and Jin'er. However, Cui Fu had been hesitant to respond.
Somehow, this matter seemed to have reached Duke Qing’s household, and it was unclear how the Duchess had stirred things up in front of Jin'er, prompting the not-yet-four-year-old to express such sentiments.
Cui Fu's face tightened at her son’s words, and tears began to well up in her eyes. Mian Tang reached over and playfully pinched Jin'er’s nose, saying, “If that’s the case, then you’re not allowed to talk to Little Yu from the Qi family or play with her anymore either!”
The daughter of Marquis Qi was as beautiful as a jade sculpture, and since her mother was familiar with Cui Fu, she often came to the mansion to play, becoming close companions with Jin'er, who always looked forward to Little Yu's visits.
So when his aunt said this, Jin'er immediately protested, crying even harder.
Mian Tang calmly replied, “Why is it that you can make friends, but your mother can’t? If you don’t allow your mother’s friends to come, then I can certainly forbid your little friends from visiting too!”
Mian Tang spoke so seriously that the not-yet-four-year-old could hardly counter her. Jin'er's earlier reluctance stemmed from his grandmother's nagging, which had filled him with a sense of unease about his mother potentially forming a bond with Lord Li, leading to more children and less affection for him. As a result, he had grown to dislike even the sled given by Lord Li.
However, now that he heard his aunt's reasoning, he felt that he wasn’t in the right and could only sulkily let the maid lead him away for his afternoon nap.
Once her son had left, Cui Fu slammed her hand on the table in frustration. “I must have owed the Guo family in my last life; even after the divorce, they won’t let me have any peace.”
Mian Tang furrowed her brows and asked, “What do you mean by that?”
