Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

Chapter 37:

Be Satisfied

“Madam, take a look at this. It was sent by Qiao Da. This fan is quite exquisite. Just give it a gentle shake like this, and you don't need much effort; the breeze becomes quite strong.”

Excitedly, Ping Ye shook the fan to show it to Lin Yunwan. A refreshing breeze wafted over, making it genuinely cool.

Lin Yunwan's long hair fluttered in the wind.

“Mother.”

Lu Chang Gong came over to pay his respects.

Lin Yunwan invited him to sit and asked Ping Ye, “Did Qiao Da only make one of these?”

Ping Ye replied, “Just one.”

“Such a good fan, having only one is a pity.” Lin Yunwan smiled and looked at Lu Chang Gong. “Chang Gong, what do you think of this fan?”

Lu Chang Gong studied the fan in Lin Yunwan's hand nodded thoughtfully. While he contemplated Lin Yunwan said, "It doesn't seem easy to make. I wonder how long it would take to make another one..."

Looking at the gently waving fan, Lu Chang Gong said, "Mother, you keep it for yourself; your son doesn't need it. There's no need for someone to go through all that trouble."

Lin Yunwan chuckled, "Who said I was going to give it to you?"

Make another one, but not... not for him? Lu Chang Gong widened his eyes, quickly revealing a shy expression due to the misunderstanding.

Lin Yunwan joked with him, "Your grandmother, uncle, and the Lady Guo you've met are all your elders. You'll have to wait."

Lu Chang Gong scratched his head. "Son, son didn't expect..."

Pin Ye laughed cheerfully, "Young Master, haven't you figured it out yet? Madam is teasing you."

Tao Ye also laughed, "Madam, this servant will go and have Qiao Da make another four."

Lin Yunwan was in a good mood, speaking lightly, "Give him more reward silver, don't let him bear the expense himself, his financial situation isn't great. Also, dig out a jar of 'Dongting Chun' buried under the wall for him to enjoy."

Hearing the name of the wine, Ping Ye widened her eyes and said, "Qiao Da really lucked out, even getting this jar of wine."

Everyone chatted and laughed, and the days quickly passed.

In the scorching summer, Qiao Da made a few more hand-held fans for Lin Yunwan. Due to receiving that jar of wine, he made a few extra ones.

The extras were sent by Lin Yunwan to the Lin family and Madam Wei.

Madam Wei had been attending to the Marquis, and it had been a while since she came to pay respects to the old lady. So, one day, she and Lin Yunwan went together.

Old Madam Lu's mood was uplifted, and she exclaimed, "Jia'er is coming back." She was referring to Lu Jia, the half-sister of Lord Lu Zhengliu and the first branch daughter-in-law of the Xia family. Currently, she held the position of the Xia family's primary daughter-in-law and was highly regarded in the household despite her status as a concubine-born.

Madam Wei also smiled with anticipation, asking, "Why is she returning at this time? It's not a festive season." After all, she had raised Jia'er, and even though she wasn't her biological daughter, she still felt a certain attachment.

Lin Yunwan chimed in, "Sister Jia's father-in-law, Lord Xia, has been transferred back to the capital. Although it's a lateral move, officials at the capital hold a higher rank than those in the provinces. It's indeed a cause for celebration. The household needs to prepare congratulatory gifts for the Xia family's return to the capital." She held a letter from the Xia family in her hands.

Now, openly, she was in charge at home, so she was the one receiving all these letters of social interaction. Of course, privately, Old Madam Lu had already received another letter from her granddaughter, Lu Jia.

Madam Wei was even more delighted, clapping her hands and saying, "Marvelous! She's truly my good daughter. She's so blessed! From now on, our whole family will be able to reunite."

Old Madam Lu also smiled, recognizing the value of having capable in-laws. She instructed Lin Yunwan, "Although your eldest sister has been married for many years, she has faced difficulties in having children. After all these years, she has only had one son, who is the legitimate eldest grandson of the Xia family. It's crucial that you pay special attention to him. If he fares well, your elder sister will fare well, and our relationship with the Xia family will prosper."

"Indeed."

Lin Yunwan smiled with pursed lips. This little nephew was truly excellent! If it weren't for him, how could Qing Ge'er offend an influential person, causing turmoil throughout the Marquis of Wu Ding's residence? Of course, the indulgence of the Lu family played a significant role in this situation.

In this life, she just had to watch from the sidelines.

Old Madam Lu had no idea about the imminent danger. She happily accepted the hand-crafted fan sent by Lin Yunwan and praised her, "You are truly filial. Where did you find such a rare item?"

Madam Wei joined in the praise, "It's really nice. The maids don't need much effort, and the breeze it produces is quiet and comfortable. When the Marquis uses it at night, he sleeps soundly." Even she found it more comfortable to sleep now. Previously, she was often disturbed by the Marquis at night.

"It was crafted by Qiao Da."

Old Madam Lu and Madam Wei's expressions changed.

Madam Wei was merely surprised, but Old Madam Lu's face didn't look as good. Clearly, she had given Qiao Da a good job, so why did he send the good things to Lin Yunwan instead of her?

"Anyway, I'm tired. You all should go back," she said, dismissing everyone.

Once everyone had left, Lin Yunwan herself felt weary and was ready to leave as well.

Madam Wei hurried back to enjoy the comfort of the hand-held fan and departed first.

Watching her leave, Ping Ye sighed, "Madam is truly blessed. She doesn't worry about anything and doesn't seem to know what it's like to be troubled."

"Not necessarily. The days when Madam will have worries are still ahead," Lin Yunwan replied.

Ping Ye was puzzled, not understanding what there could be to worry about in the future. When she saw Lin Yunwan leaving, she quickly lifted her umbrella and followed.

The mistress and servant encountered Lu Zhengliu. He had taken a day off today and seemed to have just come out of Yue Xing Ting.

"Young Master," Lin Yunwan greeted with a cold and indifferent expression.

Lu Zhengliu walked over, his tall figure blocking her way, looking at her without saying a word.

Lin Yunwan raised her head, and in his stern eyes, she sensed an added layer of coldness that she couldn't quite comprehend.

"Are you satisfied now?" he said through gritted teeth.

Lin Yunwan was puzzled, furrowing her brows as she asked, "Satisfied with what? What is the young master talking about?"

Lu Zhengliu took a step closer, a cold smile on his face, "Zhuqing."

"Lin Yunwan, tell me, what else do you want to force me to do?"

Lin Yunwan raised an eyebrow, "Young Master, did I force you to spend the night at Yue Xing Ting?"

There was a momentary pause in Lu Zhengliu's eyes, his face turning ashen, and he walked away swiftly.

Ping Ye was frightened and didn't dare to speak for a while. When the people were completely out of sight, she shivered and said, "Madam, the young master is really frightening!"

"Is that so?"

Lin Yunwan said with a very indifferent expression, "I just find it quite amusing."

Everything seemed to be "forced upon him" by others – marrying her and now, taking concubines as well.

"No one can force him! Unless he wanted to in the first place."

"A person being weak and greedy is not shameful; what's shameful is not daring to admit one's own weakness and greed."

Just as Lin Yunwan finished speaking, she saw Lu Chang Gong watering the flowers along the wall of her courtyard.

Lin Yunwan said, "The maids will water them after the sun sets. You don't need to bother."

Luchang Gong put down the watering can, smiling gently, "Mother."

Lianyun Wan walked over, wiping the sweat from his forehead, and said, "The sun is so intense, aren't you afraid of getting sunburned?"

Lu Chang Gong shook his head.

"Chang Gong, come in, I have something to tell you."

Lu Chang Gong happily followed her inside, oblivious to whether Lin Yunwan was going to talk about something sweet or poisonous.
