Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 240:

Kneel Down

"Wangfei, are you alright?" Madam Chen rushed over, her hairpins askew, upon hearing the news. But she was too preoccupied to care about her appearance.

Lin Yunwan held Zai Zai in her arms, her expression icy. She interrogated Madam Chen, "How could an outsider enter the mansion during today's banquet?"

Madam Chen bit her lip, unable to come up with a response. Technically, Lu Zhengliu wasn't an outsider.

But the Duke had made it clear that she must not openly acknowledge Bao'er as her daughter.

"Well..." Madam Chen grit her teeth and approached Lu Zhengliu, her expression darkening as she scolded, "Have you lost your mind? How dare you intrude into the inner courtyard?"

Let's calm the Wangfei down first.

The stewardess, with quick thinking, stepped forward and said, "Wangfei, this gentleman is the husband of a distant relative from our mistress's maternal family..."

Cuiqin, not mincing her words, interjected, "What kind of relative is he to the Duke's household? This is confusing everyone."

The Mama blushed deeply.

Madam Chen realized she couldn't defend herself and hurriedly apologized.

Just then, a servant from the front courtyard rushed in and whispered, "Madam, the Prince has arrived."

Madam Chen's scalp tightened in fear.

Why now of all times!

Seeing that, Lin Yunwan carried Qi Zaijun back to the mansion. She instructed Cui Qin, "Go and inform the Crown Princess Consort."

They didn't need to linger any longer at the Xingguo Mansion, but they couldn't afford to be neglectful toward the Crown Princess Consort.

Cuiqin replied, "Yes."

Madam Chen panicked and tried to put on a smiling face, saying, "Wangfei, please wait. The banquet has yet to begin, and you haven't enjoyed the hospitality yet..."

Cuiqin turned back, her expression serious. "Madam, are you trying to prevent our Wangfei from leaving?"

"N-No, no, no!" Madam Chen hurriedly waved her hands, not daring to imply such a thing.

As soon as Qi Lingheng arrived at the Xingguo Mansion, he sent someone to the inner courtyard to find Lin Yunwan. After waiting for a long time without any news, he grew impatient. Seeing the mansion's servants being evasive, his expression turned grim. "Where is the Wangfei?"

The servant had only glanced at the second gate and knew that the Wangfei seemed to have clashed with their Madam Chen, so he didn't dare to speak up.

Qi Lingheng was already very impatient.

The second young master of the Chen family hurriedly said, "Go and bring someone from the Wangfei's side here!" and tried to placate Qi Lingheng.

Qi Lingheng couldn't sit still anymore, speaking in a cold tone, "Kindly lead this prince to fetch the Wangfei."

His tone was polite, but if the Chen family refused, there was a risk that Prince Huan would immediately lead his men to storm the Chen family's residence.

After weighing the pros and cons, the second young master of the Chen family nervously said, "...Prince, please follow me."

He quickly signaled someone to inform his mother, Madam Chen. No matter what had happened, they had to pacify the Wangfei before Prince Huan lost his temper.

Upon hearing that the Prince himself was coming, Madam Chen immediately understood that he wasn't coming for a friendly visit.

She acted decisively, "Hurry, go and invite the Prince in!"

She didn't want the situation to escalate to the point where the Xingguo Mansion couldn't save face. If the incident stemmed from her ill-fated son-in-law, it would only complicate matters further. If her husband found out, she dreaded the consequences.

More people gathered near the second gate as the tension escalated.

Lu Zhengliu slowly began to realize the gravity of his situation, feeling a pressure that he couldn't bear alone.

Madame Chen, still attempting to pacify Lin Yunwan, stepped forward to explain and speak kindly.

However, accustomed to her assertiveness in the capital, Madame Chen couldn't quite bring herself to adopt a submissive demeanor. Instead, she maintained a certain level of dignity as she suggested, "Your Highness, as a lady, it wouldn't be appropriate for you to be seen in such a situation by the servants. Perhaps we should move to the warming chamber to continue our conversation."

Pointing at Lu Zhengliu, she continued, "He is a relative from my daughter-in-law's family. His previous wife passed away, and he has suffered from hysteria. As a lady of your stature, why bother with someone like him? It's beneath your dignity and that of His Highness!"

Lin Yunwan smiled.

Now the Duke's residence was turning the tables and accusing her of wrongdoing?

Qi Zaijun couldn't bear to watch anymore. He got down from Lin Yunwan's arms and sternly rebuked Madam Chen, "You old woman, how dare you speak to my mother like that?"

Even before Lin Yunwan could say a word, Madam Chen was already drenched in cold sweat.

The one speaking was the imperial grandson. Who didn't know that Emperor Jingshun doted the most on Prince Huan and the imperial grandson?

Things seemed to have gone beyond normal protocol.

Madam Chen hastily tried to placate Qi Zaijun, "The Shizi has misunderstood. I did not mean to offend the Princess..."

"Whether you meant to or not, I don't know? Do you dare to argue with me?" Qi Zaijun was furious. He stood in front of Lin Yunwan and said, "Mother, I'll take you out. If anyone dares to stop us today, I'll chop off their head!"

He then led Lian Yunwan towards the second gate.

"What kind of Duke's residence is this? I'm never coming back! I'll go and tell the Emperor, and have your entire family executed!"

Although the child's words were thoughtless, Madam Chen was so frightened that her legs went weak, and she would have fallen if someone hadn't supported her.

Second Master Chen arrived with Qi Lingheng. He looked at the group of people, blocking his wife and son from leaving, his face darkened. He hurried over, shielding Lin Yunwan first, and asked in a low voice, "Are you alright?"

Lin Yunwan shook her head.

It wasn't a big deal originally. With so many servants around her, Lu Zhengliu couldn't do anything to her. If Madame Chen hadn't made a big fuss, fearing that she, the Princess, would suddenly leave and embarrass the Duke's residence, it wouldn't have escalated.

But now she wouldn't casually say "it's nothing" in front of Qi Lingheng.

Her voice was neither loud nor soft as she said, "There was an outsider in the Duke's residence who clashed with me. I want to go back to the Prince's residence, but Madam Chen won't let me and Jun'er leave."

Qi Zaijun nodded. "Father, it's Madam Chen and him—they offended Mother. Father, you must deal with them quickly!"

The surrounding servants only just realized that it was the Prince who had arrived.

Qi Lingheng didn't even spare a glance at the pale-faced Madam Chen. He turned his head slowly, looking at Lu Zhengliu with indifferent eyes, as if he were looking at an ant.

Second Master Chen was also filled with anger.

Although he was a legitimate son, he couldn't interfere in his stepmother's affairs. However, he and his elder brother both hated the leeches of the Lu family.

He frowned and said, "Kneel down now."

Second Master Chen held no official position. Although he was from a prestigious family, he was still just an ordinary person.

He took the lead in kneeling down. "Your Highness, Your Highness Consort, please calm your anger."

With their master kneeling, the servants followed suit even faster. The sound of kneeling echoed throughout the courtyard: "Your Highness, Your Highness Consort, please calm your anger."

Madam Chen, with her status, didn't need to kneel. However, seeing her own people kneeling, she had already softened in her heart.

Lu Zhengliu stood stiffly in place, like a rigid, lifeless tree. He parted his lips, once cold and straight, now silent at this moment.

Qi Lingheng looked at him expressionlessly, asking in a calm tone, "Who isn't kneeling?"

After a moment of silence, Lu Zhengliu finally knelt down. "Your Highness, Your... Wangfei," he said, bowing his head.

Qi Zaijun furrowed his eyebrows. "Father, let's go home first."

He decided they would address the matter with the Prince's residence later, letting his great-grandfather handle it.

Qi Lingheng nodded in agreement. He held his son with one hand and led Wangfei Lin along with the other, departing swiftly.

Lu Zhengliu remained kneeling on the ground, unable to lift his head.

Ge Bao'er arrived late, unaware of what had happened. Her own son, Lu Chang Zong, hid in the hallway, peeking at everything that unfolded.
