Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 207:

 Back To The Door

"Grandmother?" Lin Yunwan and Qi Lingheng returned to the Lin family's main residence together, only to find Lin Grandma waiting for them there.

Lin Yunwan went forward and bowed respectfully.

"You are already a royal consort," Old Madam Lin said, rising to her feet and helping Lin Yunwan up. According to etiquette, she shouldn't accept the bow from a royal consort. Qi Lingheng only nodded politely in acknowledgment.

Lin Huabin, standing nearby, felt quite uncomfortable. After all, he was supposed to be the father-in-law of the prince!

"Please, take a seat," Old Madam Lin said to both of them. "Your... younger sister is arriving soon."

After they sat down, Lin Yunwan felt a sense of desolation in the room. She asked, "Why isn't Madam here?"

With Lin Yunjiao absent, the Lin family's main residence seemed much quieter with only two legitimate sons and the concubines rarely appearing.

Lin Huabin remained silent, while Old Madam Lin calmly explained, "Madam is unwell."

Lin Yunwan wanted to inquire further about Madam's condition, but Old Madam Lin reassured her, "It's not a serious illness. You don't need to worry about it or attend to her."

With that, Lin Yunwan realized she had no further obligations in this matter. However, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss. Why would Madam suddenly fall ill? Perhaps Old Madam Lin's visit indicated that Madam had already been punished in some way.

Just then, Lin Yunjiao burst into the room, followed by Wenhai, who trailed behind her, muttering to himself with his head down.

Startled to see a stranger in the house, Lin Yunjiao stumbled for a moment. Lin Huabin reprimanded her, "How can you be so careless even after getting married?"

Taken aback, Lin Yunjiao quickly composed herself upon seeing Old Madam Lin and greeted her first, "Grandmother."

Old Madam Lin instructed, "Don't forget to pay respects to the prince and princess." She didn't mention them as Lin Yunwan's sister and brother-in-law.

Lin Yunjiao understood the situation very well. She and Lin Yunwan were not biological sisters; in fact, they were more like enemies.

With a gritted teeth, Lin Yunjiao approached Qi Lingheng and Lin Yunwan and greeted them, "Your Highness, Your Highness."

Qi Lingheng remained impassive, offering no response.

He and the womenfolk didn't exchange words.

Under Lin Huabin's urging gaze, Wenhai also approached to pay his respects, "Your Highness, Your Highness."

Lin Yunwan nodded faintly and said, "Sister, brother-in-law."

Both couples took their seats, with Lin Yunwan sitting beside Old Madam Lin. Lin Yunjiao, feeling restless, asked Lin Huabin with confusion, "Father, where's my mother?"

Lin Huabin brushed her off with a few words, instructing her not to ask further, and hurriedly went to talk to Qi Lingheng. He had some official matters to discuss.

Since entering officialdom, he had spent many years in the government office in Jiangqian. Now, with his fake daughter married off and his considerable wealth drained, he owed a significant sum to his elder and third brothers. All of it was documented in written IOUs. If he didn't find a way to repay them, he could forget about living comfortably in the future!

"Your Highness, I have an assistant who happens to be from Yulin County. Yulin County isn't just known for its Yuchai Paste and Yuchai Fragrant Cakes[1]; they've been repairing the river embankment every year. I heard they're starting again this year..."

Whenever Jiangqian delicacies were mentioned, Lin Huabin always brought up the river embankment. Old Madam Lin knew her son's character very well. He wouldn't offend people easily, but wherever there was profit to be made, he would seize it.

She had heard he had sold many cherished calligraphy pieces and antiques. He must be in dire straits! However, she wouldn't use her personal favors for such matters.

Old Madam Lin smiled and gently chided Lin Huabin, saying, "You don't have to worry about the riverbank, why bring that up? We're all women of the household, we don't understand the affairs of the officialdom. Just talk to this old woman about everyday matters!"

Lin Huabin responded sheepishly, "Yes..." Lin Huabin felt a bit upset. How could his mother undermine him like this?

Lin Yunwan continued to talk with Old Madam Lin about the delicacies of Jiangqian. Qi Lingheng patiently listened, occasionally interjecting with a question or two.

Wenhai dared not speak.

Lin Yunjiao, on the other hand, felt that this no longer seemed like her home! She didn't feel like talking. She was only thinking about finishing quickly so she could go see Madam Zheng.

Old Madam Lin had no intention of having Lin Yunwan and Qi Lingheng stay for a meal. She expressed fatigue, sighing, "I'm not as strong as I used to be."

Her maid came over and said, "Old Madam, it's time for your medicine."

Old Madam Lin announced that she was leaving.

"I'll escort you," Lin Yunwan offered.

If she was going, could Qi Lingheng just sit here? He stood up and said gently, "I'll accompany you as well."

"Your Highness..." Lin Huabin was a bit anxious. He hadn't had a chance to talk to his son-in-law yet, why was he in such a hurry to leave?

As the father of the bride, shouldn't he show some authority? Qi Lingheng should listen to him!

"Your Highness," Lin Huabin spoke with seriousness.

Old Madam Lin glanced at him and said, "You should accompany me back too! It's been many years since you've taken care of my medication, hasn't it, Second Son?"

"Yes..." Lin Huabin felt a bit guilty. At his age, shouldn't this be something the servants handled?

Lin Yunjiao stood up and said, "Old Madam, Mother is sick. My husband and I will go see her first."

"Alright," Old Madam Lin nodded, not insisting on their stay.

Lin Yunwan and Qi Lingheng escorted Old Madam Lin out together, being attentive and supportive as they walked her out, one on each side. Lin Huabin followed behind.

Lin Yunjiao faintly heard Qi Lingheng saying, "Listen to Her Highness... Follow Her Highness's lead..."

Old Madam Lin teased with a smile, "Your Highness spoils Her Highness too much."

Qi Lingheng felt it was only natural, "Now that we're married, everything should prioritize Her Highness."

As their voices faded away, Lin Yunjiao glanced at the silent Wenhai and snorted.

Wenhai was completely baffled.

Why was she angry again? "Sigh..." Thinking about their wedding night, with the blood marks scratched on his body... Well, a real man doesn't quarrel with a woman.

"What are you standing there for!"

Lin Yunjiao snapped back, glaring at Wenhai.

Wenhai, who had been lost in thought, was startled and quickly caught up.

He asked in a low voice, "Madam... My wife, where are we going?"

"You fool, didn't you hear that my mother is sick? Of course, we're going to see her!"

"Oh, oh!" Wenhai pondered about his mother-in-law, scratching his head in frustration.

"How could Auntie bear to marry Yunjiao to me..." Having lived in the Lin residence for so long, he knew very well that Auntie never thought highly of him. Although he saved Yunjiao's life, given the Lin family's background... Auntie probably reluctantly agreed to this marriage. Now he didn't know how to face his mother-in-law.

"Restricted? Who dares to restrict my mother's movements?!"

As soon as Lin Yunjiao arrived, she saw the maid guarding the courtyard where Madam Zheng was kept.

Frowning, she demanded, "Where's Fan Mama? I want to see her!" She could always rely on the servants!

The gruff maid didn't mince words, "Fan Mama? Hahaha, Second Madam you'll have to go to the beyond to find her!"

Lin Yunjiao found it unbelievable. How could their home change so much in just two days?!
