Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 152:

 Reputation

"Madam, are you holding up okay?"

Returning from the Cien Temple to the Lin Manor, Old Madam Lin's complexion grew paler by the minute.

Fan Mama, was deeply concerned.

Old Madam Lin replied, "I'm fine. Quickly, help me change my clothes. Is the banquet in the Flower Hall about to begin? Have they started singing on the stage?"

Fan Mama replied, "With First Madam overseeing everything, what else do you have to worry about?"

Old Madam Lin nodded, changed her clothes, and applied some lipstick before heading over.

During the banquet, she was very close to her daughters-in-law from the first and third branch, but somewhat distant towards Madam Zheng.

However, when it came to her three sons, she praised them all equally: "The second and third sons are more meticulous, while the eldest is also filial. He may not be as eloquent as his younger brothers, but his filial piety speaks volumes..."

There was no blame directed at Lin Huabin at all.

Surrounded by grandchildren, Lin Huabin's two sons also came over, and she treated them all with the same affection.

Lin Yunwan watched calmly, thinking to herself... perhaps this is what it means to be a mother. But this wasn't necessarily a good thing.

The next day was the main banquet, and it wasn't just relatives from the Lin family who attended.

The Lin family also invited Qi Lingheng, but a gift from the Prince's mansion was sent over instead, and Qi Lingheng himself did not attend the banquet.

During the banquet, there were discussions about Qi Lingheng.

"The Prince has yet to attend any banquets from any family."

"It's probably because he doesn't like these kinds of events..."

Some whispered, "Maybe he hasn't found a suitable woman..."

If he had found the favored Princess, why wouldn't he appear in person?

"It seems the Zhao family has arrived."

"Master Zhao has good relations, and he has connections with Second Master Lin. Who in Jiangqian wouldn't attend his family's celebrations?"

In any case, news about Prince Huan's marriage is still tightly guarded.

Lin Yunwan sat at the banquet for a while.

Xiruo whispered to her, "Madam has escaped..."

Looking over, Yunwan saw Madam Zheng leaving with a disheveled appearance. The incident at the Cien Monastery had spread, and her mother-in-law was giving her the cold shoulder. Even her sisters-in-law weren't speaking up for her. She simply couldn't bear it any longer!

"It's what she deserves," she whispered softly before taking a sip of tea.

"Yunwan."

Suddenly, someone called out to her. Yunwan turned to see Dong Shuangshuang.

"Madam Dong."

Seeing that Dong Shuangshuang hadn't brought her child this time, Yunwan smiled and asked, "Where is your little one?"

Dong Shuangshuang replied, "She refused to come, so I left her with the nursemaid."

Yunwan then stood up and said, "Let's go, I'll accompany you to listen to the opera."

The two of them walked out together, and Yunwan asked about Dong Shuangshuang's injuries, "Have you applied the medicine? Is it getting better?"

Dong Shuangshuang nodded, and seeing that there was no one nearby, she boldly rolled up her sleeve and said, "I've applied it."

The scars on her arm had already faded significantly.

Yunwan held her hand and advised, "Old wounds heal easily, don't add any new ones."

Dong Shuangshuang lowered her head, not wanting to say much.

She really didn't know what to say... She didn't want to get hurt either.

Her family was already troubled by her own affairs; she didn't want to burden her friends with them.

She whispered, "I've heard about your stepmother's situation."

"Your grandmother is still fair. But I've also heard... Is the matter not settled yet? Do you need me to..."

Dong Shuangshuang was very nervous. She rarely stood up for others like this. She pursed her lips and said, "If your grandmother needs witnesses, I can testify to what I saw back then!"

Lin Yunwan smiled and said, "You were still young at that time. Your words might not be admissible as evidence."

Dong Shuangshuang replied, "But I'm not young anymore! What I say is the truth!"

Lin Yunwan held her hand and looked into her eyes, saying, "Shuangshuang, I know you want to help me." Her voice was very gentle. "But I no longer have any trouble. You should find a way to help yourself."

Dong Shuangshuang paused for a moment. "Help myself?" she asked.

Lin Yunwan nodded.

Dong Shuangshuang lowered her sleeve, covering the scar on her arm. She remained silent for a moment before asking, "Even though your grievances have been cleared, your stepmother is not an easy person to deal with. Yunwan, is there anything else I can do to help you?"

She had resolved to help her friend in any way she could.

Things she couldn't do when she was young, she could do now. Moreover, she didn't want to see Yunwen end up like her, ruining her future because of a stepmother who didn't care for her.

"There is indeed something," Yunwan said.

Dong Shuangshuang widened her eyes. "What is it?"

Yunwan whispered to her.

...................

After meeting with Dong Shuangshuang, Yunwan went to watch the entire play under the stage, only returning to the Second Residence after three days of continuous performances.

The opera lasted for three days before finally concluding with the end of the Old Madam's birthday celebration.

Then, Fan Mama came to give lessons to Yunwan and Lin Yunjiao.

She smiled and said, "I showed the flowers drawn by the young misses to the Old Madam, and she said both of you did very well."

Speaking to Yunwan alone, she added, "The eldest miss' drawing is the most natural and spontaneous. The Old Madam said she liked it very much. When your skills mature, the Old Madam said she would have you draw a pattern for her forehead band, so the people in the needlework room can make it for her to wear."

Yunwan smiled and replied, "If the Old Madam doesn't mind, I'll learn embroidery and make a forehead band for her."

Fan Mama said:“That's even better!"

Lin Yunjiao pouted nearby, feeling aggrieved, but her confidence had already been shaken. After the Old Madam's birthday celebration, her sister, who had nearly killed her, was no longer seen as the culprit!

The Old Madam, along with the women from the other two branches of the family, and even the ladies from the West Lin Manor and other prominent families in Jiangqian, had all begun to show affection towards Yunwan!

This shouldn't be happening!

She was supposed to be the apple of her parents' eyes!

“It's going to rain." Fan Mama said. Feeling suddenly cold, she glanced outside and noticed the change in the weather.

Xiruo held an umbrella at the door and said, "Mama, this umbrella is prepared for you."

With a smile, she accepted the umbrella and continued teaching the two girls.

Today, Lin Yunjiao was distracted and lacked the spirit to listen to the lesson. She even started to resent the maid, as she was close to the Old Madam.

"The Old Madam is clearly biased! She could have chosen not to believe what that Ling Xiang said!" On the way back home from lessons, Lin Yunjiao was on the verge of tears.

The maidservant dared not speak back, keeping her head low and listening quietly.

Lin Yunjiao walked ahead with frustration brewing inside her. Without understanding why, she impetuously approached and stopped Lin Yunwan.

"You! Stop right there!"

Xiruo had positioned herself in front of Lin Yunwan, giving her a skeptical look. "What does Miss Yunjiao intend to do?"

Lin Yunjiao's momentum instantly weakened. She hadn't brought many maids or servants with her for the lesson, but Xiruo was strong, and she seemed willing to use force. Yunjiao couldn't afford to confront her sister directly.

Yunjiao stubbornly retorted, "Yunwan, don't get too cocky! The truth hasn't been revealed yet. What Ling Xiang said might not be true! Even if you didn't harm me... don't think you can just take away what belongs to me!"

"Lin Yunwan, what our parents gave me is meant for me alone," Lian Yunjiao stated firmly.

Lin Yunwan looked at her expressionlessly for a moment before slowly breaking into a smile, a smile that seemed nonchalant.

It sent shivers down Yunjiao's spine. Unconsciously, she took a step back. "What are you laughing at? What's so funny?" she demanded.

'She's got some nerve,' Yunjiao thought, feeling a surge of anger. She was furious, and yet her sister dared to smile.

Lin Yunwan spoke calmly, "I understand you're anxious and scared, but you shouldn't come looking for trouble with me."

Yunjiao furrowed her brow, torn between fear of what she might hear and curiosity. "Lin Yunwan, what are you trying to say?"

"Lin Yunjiao, if you're so restless, why don't you just go and ask your Mother? Did she really feel it wouldn't matter if her own child died when she was ruthless enough to poison herself all those years ago?" Yunwan's tone remained composed.

"For all these years, make sure you're not hating the wrong person."

Yunjiao's face turned pale. "Shut up! Just shut up!"

"Lin Yunwan, my mother would never do such a thing!"

Her parents had always cherished her, especially her mother. How could she have nearly endangered Yunjiao's life before she was even born?

She couldn't believe it! Yunjiao broke down in tears and ran towards Madam Zheng's courtyard.

"Let's let Madam worry for a while."

With that, Lin Yunwan and Xi Ru returned to Bi Xi Tang. She had important matters to attend to.

She had no choice; she had to marry, and to someone worth marrying.

Now that she had a decent reputation, all she needed was a suitable husband.
