Chapter 14:

To Slap Your Own Face

"Father."

"Father."

As soon as Lu Zhengliu arrived, both Lu Chang Gong and Lu Qing Ge'er stood in the corridor to welcome him, looking like mice encountering a cat, obediently waiting.

In fact, he didn't meet his two sons often, so he wondered why they were so afraid of him.

"What did you learn from Madam today?"

He stepped into Lu Chang Gong's room first, and seeing the brush-shaped zongzi on his desk, he already had an idea... The one who threw away the brush zongzi was Qing Ge'er.

Lulu Zhengliu felt a bit annoyed.

"The first day, we haven't learned much yet."

Although Lu Qing Ge'er was afraid of his father, he had more courage than Lu Chang Gong, and even dared to smile when answering.

Lu Zhengliu glanced at him; naturally stern in appearance, he looked serious. Lu Qing Ge'er immediately dared not smile.

Lu Chang Gong respectfully said, "Father, Madam taught us to recognize brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones."

Lu Zhengliu asked some more questions casually. However, after his cold glance, Qing Ge'er kept his head down and didn't dare to speak.

Lu Zhengliu felt a bit reluctant. After all, his son had just returned home, being too strict might damage their father-son relationship.

Lu Zhengliu left quickly, instructing his servant, "Handle this brush-shaped zongzi properly, don't let anyone see it."

"Yes."

If it got out, it might cause trouble.

Lu Zhengliu thought he had successfully suppressed this little storm.

~

Lu Chang Gong always wore the jade pendant that Lin Yunwan had given him.

The person attending Lu Qing Ge'er suggested, "Young Master Qing, since it's a gift from the Young Madam, even the Eldest Master knows that wearing it pleases Madam. How about allowing this servant to help you put it on?"

"Okay." Lu Qing Ge'er, still half-asleep, agreed without much thought.

Upon waking up, he saw the jade pendant around his waist and immediately took it off. Although not young, he knew that if his Mother wouldn't like him eating the brush-shaped zongzi, she probably wouldn't like this jade pendant either. As for the servant's suggestion, he had already forgotten it.

When Lin Yunwan started teaching them calligraphy, she noticed that Lu Chang Gong had simply tied the jade pendant with a string around his waist, and she felt it looked a bit crude.

After class, she asked Lu Chang Gong, "Would you like me to make a proper knot for you?"

Following her gaze to his waist, Lu Chang Gong raised his head, and his deep, black eyes gleamed slightly.

"Mother, would that trouble you?"

Lin Yunwan smiled and said, "Both Tao Ye and Ping Ye can tie knots. They'll be happy to help."

Lu Chang Gong took off the jade pendant and extended it to LinYunwan.

She made a blue square-patterned knot for him and returned it after a few days.

Wearing a white robe cinched at the waist, the jade pendant hung gracefully on Lu Chang Gong's waist, presenting an elegant appearance.

Ping Ye, upon seeing him, smiled and remarked, "Madam, the Eldest Young Master is becoming more handsome, as if he resembles you a bit!"

She would never have her own biological child in this lifetime.

But Lu Chang Gong was indeed a good child, reserved and calm, with the shyness of a child. He not only had natural talent in his studies but also worked diligently, making him a promising student.

Lin Yunwan smiled faintly.

If her father were alive and encountered such a student, he would be delighted.

After teaching for a while, Lin Yunwan gradually increased the amount of homework. With the increasing academic workload, the different personalities of the two children began to manifest.

"Madam, Eldest Young Master Chang Gong writes really well. Every sheet of paper looks almost the same."

When it was time to check the homework submitted by Lu Qing Ge'er, Tao Ye remained silent, and Ping Ye coldly snorted, "Obviously, it's not written by the same person. Even for basic practice, he needs someone else's help. With more than a decade of arduous study ahead, who does he plan to have do it for him?"

Lin Yunwan collected all the homework submitted by Lu Qing Ge'er. Before she could address his issues, someone from Yu Shou Tang came to find her.

"Madam, the Old Madam requests your presence."

"I understand."

~

Ge Bao'er said, "Madam, it's just a jade pendant. If Qing Ge'er doesn't have one, it's fine. As long as Qing Ge'er's studies are not affected, it's okay. He hasn't come over these days, and I don't know how well he's doing."

Old Madam Lu didn't speak. She gave Ge Bao'er a cold glance and said, "You don't need to speak with insinuations. Whether Yunwan treats them differently or not, we'll know when they arrive."

She didn't want to openly criticize Lin Yunwan in front of Ge Bao'er. However, when Ge Bao'er informed her that Lu Chang Gong had a jade pendant while Qing Ge'er didn't, she wasn't pleased. If Lin Yunwan couldn't even be fair with a simple jade pendant, how could she treat the two children equally in their studies?

Of course, Old Madam Lu wouldn't easily believe Ge Bao'er's words. To find out what really happened, she needed to ask Qing Ge'er himself.

"Madam, Eldest Young Master Lu Zhengliu and Young Master Qing Ge'er are here."

Lu Zhengliu came with Qing Ge'er.

Old Madam Lu joyfully embraced Qing Ge'er and asked him, "Did the Madam give a jade pendant to Chang Gong? Do you have one too?"

Qing Ge'er nodded, "I have one."

Ge Bao'er's face changed.

Old Madam Lu asked with a smile, "Why don't you wear it? It was a gift from your mother. Chang Gong knows to wear it, but do you not. Don't you want to show your mother that you appreciate her gift? It's letting down your mother's sincere intentions."

Qing Ge'er pressed his lips and looked towards Ge Bao'er.

Lu Zhengliu also looked at Ge Bao'er.

Ge Baor felt anxious and explained, "I-I didn't tell Qing Ge'er not to wear the jade pendant. I didn't even know that Madam had given him one."

She felt wronged; she truly didn't know about it.
