Favoring Concubines and Destroying Wives? I Refuse to be the Mistress of this Marquis' Mansion

 Chapter 135:

Seeking a Son

"The Madam is still praying. Please wait for a moment, Miss."

After offering the longevity lamp, Lin Yunwan returned to her original spot. Meanwhile, Madam Zheng was still in another hall, offering incense to a Bodhisattva known for helping with fertility.

Xirou whispered, "The mistress is also praying for a child."

The maid who accompanied them, having received her payment, volunteered some information. "Miss, the mistress once experienced a miscarriage. She accidentally slipped and lost the child. It was around four months into the pregnancy."

Lin Yunwan was surprised. With Lin Huabin's deep affection for Madam Zheng, how could he let her go through a miscarriage?

The maid explained further, "It was an unfortunate accident, and the child couldn't be saved due to the fall."

"That's quite a long time ago!"

Lin Yunwan couldn't help but wonder about the danger Madam Zheng faced during that incident. The fact that Madam Zheng managed to recover spoke to her robust constitution.

Xirou commented, "It's really hard to believe that the Madam had a miscarriage. She looks very healthy now, without any signs of past trauma."

The maid added, "It's been almost ten years, and the mistress has completely recovered."

Lin Yunwan remained skeptical. Miscarriages could indeed have long-lasting effects on a woman's fertility. She remembered hearing about a concubine who, after a miscarriage, could no longer conceive.

"No wonder Madam Zheng hasn't borne a legitimate son."

Madam Zheng only had two illegitimate sons, both very young. The elder one had just learned to walk. Madam Zheng, however, had little interest in raising them herself, nor did she allow her attendants to do so. She only occasionally inquired about the children's well-being. She seemed quite indifferent to them.

Lin Yunwan had yet to meet her two nominal younger brothers.

"Madam is coming."

The maid spoke with a hint of fear, lowering her head and stepping back. Madam Zheng emerged from the hall, in high spirits.

Ling Yunwan hadn't started guessing yet when Madam Fan explained, "I heard that the fertility Bodhisattva at Cien Temple is most effective. Madam, this time you got the best fortune. It seems you might conceive a little son!"

She laughed, and her complexion became rosy.

Her appearance was always outstanding, standing among a group of servants, she still shone brightly.

Madam Zheng gently touched her abdomen and said with a smile, "If I succeed this time, all of you will deserve credit."

As she walked out and spotted Lin Yunwan, her expression was neither good nor bad.

As they got on the carriage, Madam Zheng and Fan Mama muttered to each other, "Could it be that the servant girl has brought me the fortune of having an heir..."

"Pah! Just relying on her?"

Madam Zheng feels that she shouldn't trust too much in those things; it's better to rely on her own efforts.

She told Fan Mama, "Hurry up and take the master's name card to request the famous doctor who is good at ensuring pregnancies. Ask him to come over and prescribe a good medicine for me."

Fan Mama hesitated and said, "Didn't you used to complain that the medicine was too bitter?"

Madam Zheng frowned and said, "Even if it's bitter, I have to take it." She was unwilling in her heart: "Both of the little ones are growing up, and I can't leave everything to the wet nurse when they remember things later. I must take care of it myself. But managing someone else's child, pah, what's that all about!" Still, it's better to give birth on one's own.

Fan Mama could only say, "Madam, once we return to the mansion, I will take the card and invite the doctor."

The group returned to the Lin Mansion. Lin Huabin had already mentioned that Madam Zheng should take Lin Yunwan to visit relatives on both sides.Madam  Zheng didn't like dealing with her two sisters-in-law, so she sent someone over in advance to inform them.

"The replies from the eldest and third branches were quite positive and consistent," said Madam Zheng, her tone tinged with sarcasm. "They all said, 'Our Madam mentioned that she only needs to bring the girls along. Madam, the old Madam, and the sisters all like the girls.' " Madam Zheng smiled as she replied to their messages, but inside, she sneered. "For these past few years, everyone has been minding their own business, not wanting to offend anyone! They treat my darling like she's ice cold, but it's different with that wretched Lin Yunwan!"

Fan Mama came over to advise, "Even if it's different, it's just distant relatives. It's just some polite words; Madam, don't take it to heart."

Madam Zheng also understood that after the separation, the influence of the two branches couldn't reach into her courtyard. She was just venting with a bitter remark. "Go and tell the eldest Miss, let her get up early tomorrow, change her clothes, and go meet the relatives from the eldest and third branches."

"Understood."

The next day,

Lin Yunwan got up early to freshen up and went to meet the relatives with Madam Zheng. Although they only planned to meet the people from the first and third branches, they still had to go through the motions and greet the Old Madam. They first went to the main courtyard, where the Old Madam lived.

The gate was opened by the servant Fan Mama, and Madam Zheng was surprised. "Fan Mama, how come it's you!"

This venerable lady, just like the Old Madam, is quite formidable. However, she is very discreet and, despite being well taken care of in the Lin residence, never interferes in the affairs of the household. She simply keeps the Old Madam company to pass the time.

Fan Mama smiled warmly; she was an amiable person with dimples when she smiled. It was evident that she must have been a beauty in her youth.

She inquired, "Madam, have you come to pay respects to the old Madam with the young lady?"

Madam Zheng replied, "Exactly."

Looking back at Lin Yunwan, Lin Yunwan stepped forward to greet Fan Mama first.

Fan Mama glanced at Lin Yunwan, who had her head lowered. The skin on her forehead was fair, her eyes were not visible, but her manners were decent. Although her demeanor was casual and lacked the discipline seen in the instructed young ladies of the mansion, she seemed well-behaved.

Having made up her mind, Fan Mama suggested, "The Old Madam happens to be free now. Madam, why don't you bring the young lady in to pay respects?"

"Ah..." Madam Zheng tightened her grip on her handkerchief. She hadn't intended to meet the Old Madam!

With a gentle smile, Fan Mama said, "Madam, what's the matter? It's a rare occasion for the Old Madam to have some free time. You've shown filial piety by coming to pay respects. Why not go inside?"

Madam Zheng twitched her lips and said, "Yes."

She entered with Lin Yunwan. Inside, the maids had prepared two cushions for them to kneel on. Lin's old lady sat on a couch, with two maids attending to her—one massaging her shoulders, and the other kneading her legs.

"Old lady,"

Lin Yunwan followed Madam Zheng and greeted, "Paying respects to the Old Madam."

Old Madam Lin's voice was very calm but carried authority. "Get up and talk."

The maids helped both Madam Zheng and Lin Yunwan stand up. Before Madam Zheng could even sit down, Lin's old lady inquired, "Why is it only Yunwan who came? Where is Yunjiao?"

Madam Zheng's legs felt weak. This Old Madam was shrewd, and she must have already found out about Yunjiao's punishment. Madam Zheng dared neither lie nor tell the truth, so she replied, "I found her too restless, so I had her copy books at home." She didn't want to reveal that her daughter was being punished.

Old Madam Lin didn't expose Madam Zheng. Being astute after living for so many years, she was not fond of wasting words. She said, "You can go back. Let Yunwan stay with me for a while."

Madam Zheng hesitated, "This....."

Madam Zheng felt a bit uneasy, wondering what the Old Madam was up to!

Curiosity also struck Lin Yunwan. Why did Old Madam Lin want to keep her?

Smiling, Fan Mama said, "Madam, I'll escort you out." Madam Zheng couldn't refuse, but as she left, she warned Lin Yunwan with a glance not to speak out of turn in front of the Old Madam.

"Old Madam," Fan Mama returned and Lin Yunwan respectfully curtsied.

Old Madam Lin spoke softly, "Look up." Lin Yunwan's heart sank. Had the Old Madam figured something out? Still, she raised her head.
