Rebirth of the Noble Daughter of a High Ranking Family

 Chapter 13:

A Miss Li Falls From The Sky

For two consecutive days, Ouyang Zhi "coincidentally" encountered Li Yue'e at the residence of Old Madam Li. Old Madam Li, a shrewd individual, quickly understood the situation. Her astute eyes darted between her son and her niece, and she soon formulated a plan.

In the early years when Madam Lin had just entered the family, she showed utmost respect to her mother-in-law. However, as her position became more secure over the years, she became arrogant and presumptuous. To Old Madam Li's surprise, Madam Lin even dared to target her grandson, Young Master Jue.

Old Madam Li felt it necessary to assert her authority over Madam Lin. Moreover, officials like Ouyang Zhi often had multiple concubines. Currently, with only two concubines and neither having borne children, the importance of descendants was paramount. Madam Lin, coming from a prestigious family herself, should understand this principle.

However, Old Madam Li hesitated, considering that Ouyang Nuan treated Li Yue'e kindly. She worried that discussing marriage arrangements for her son with her granddaughter might cause complications. Yet, it was inappropriate for a grandmother to discuss her son's concubines with her granddaughter. Therefore, she decided to first send Zhang Mama to subtly inquire about Ouyang Naun's thoughts.

Zhang Mama took the initiative to approach Ouyang Nuan. After beating around the bush for a while, she finally broached the main topic with a forced smile, saying, "Miss, Old Madam can't bear to see Miss Li from the Li family leave our household. It just so happens that Master also lacks a confidante by his side... However, considering your good relationship with Miss Li, Old Madam sent me here hoping that you wouldn't misunderstand her intentions regarding this matter."

Upon hearing this, Ouyang Nuan's lips curved into a smile, and she cheerfully responded, "Then congratulations to Father... When is the wedding scheduled?"

Madam Zhang had imagined countless possibilities but hadn't anticipated this response from Ouyang Nuan. She felt puzzled but maintained a smile on her face as she replied, "It still depends on Miss Li's opinion. As long as you are clear about it, Miss."

Ouyang Nuan took Madam Zhang's hand and said affectionately, "Grandmother didn't ask Aunt first but came to me directly, showing genuine concern for me. In the future, if there's anything, just tell me directly, so Zhang Mama won't have to make a special trip."

On the side, Fang Mama slipped a thick red envelope into Zhang Mama's pocket and said, "Miss is young, and only you understand Old Madam's thoughts the best. If Miss does anything wrong, please give her more guidance."

When Zhang Mama left, she was all smiles, her eyes almost disappearing into her grin. Hongyu, feeling somewhat disgusted by her sycophantic behavior, muttered under her breath, "Why does Miss bother with someone who belittles her like that?"

"The more petty they are, the more they can be useful to me. Hongyu, don't underestimate these people. They'll have a big role to play in the future." Watching Zhang Mama's retreating figure, a smile of irony crossed Ouyang Nuan's face.

"Yes, Miss."

Adding fuel to the fire in Madam Lin's case will only make the situation worse. Of course, the more secretive this matter is, the more impactful it will be when it erupts...

Old Madam Li initially thought her granddaughter would be unhappy. Seeing her being so reasonable, she became more convinced that her idea was correct, so she decisively shared the matter with Li Yue'e as well.

Li Yue'e was a clever person. Upon hearing from Zhang Mama, she was initially surprised, then became quite annoyed for a while.

So, they mean to... could it be that they see me, an unmarried girl with no backing, as an easy target to bully?

However, as she calmed down and thought it over, she remembered the encounter with Ouyang Zhi outside Ouyang Nuan's courtyard. He was not old, held a high official position, and carried himself with grace and elegance. The issue was that she could have been married as the principal wife in an ordinary family, so why should she now become someone's concubine? If her parents were still alive, they could have arranged for her to marry her cousin as his principal wife, which would have been a truly favorable match. What was happening now? Li Yue'e felt a sense of regret and injustice. Although Madam Lin was born into the Marquis's household, she was only a concubine's daughter. In terms of looks and talent, Li Yue'e didn't feel inferior to her in the slightest; it was just a matter of luck, or perhaps the lack thereof.

Li Yue'e felt restless and troubled, and instinctively opened the box of jewelry that Ouyang Nuan had given her. Her eyes couldn't help but linger on the contents. If she were to marry into an ordinary family, even as the principal wife, she would still have to endure hardship. But if she were to marry Ouyang Zhi...

She tossed and turned all night, pondering over her decision, until she finally mustered up the courage to approach Old Madam Li the next day, nodding shyly in agreement.

Old Madam Li, known for her decisive nature, wasted no time. The next day, when Ouyang Zhi and Madam Lin came to pay their respects, she immediately brought up the matter for discussion. Ouyang Nuan and Ouyang Ke were both present, and Ouyang Ke's face turned pale in an instant. She looked at her mother, momentarily at a loss for words.

Madam Lin gave Li Yue'e a piercing glance, her eyes akin to a venomous snake fixating on its prey. Li Yue'e trembled in fear, instinctively hiding behind Old Madam Li.

"Old Madam, isn't this inappropriate? Miss Li came here to seek refuge with our relatives. How can we take her as a concubine? Doing so would surely tarnish the reputation of our master," Madam Lin reasoned with a smile after a moment's pause.

Upon hearing this, even Ouyang Nuan couldn't help but admire this woman. After the initial shock, she managed to come up with such a lofty reason. Truly commendable. However, was their grandmother so easily swayed?

"What reputation? The Minister of Personnel is just one rank higher than Zhi'er. Didn't he also take a courtesan as his concubine? Who can say anything about him? Our Yue'e is from a respectable family. Can it insult the master's reputation?"

"Old Madam, Wanru is right. How could we let our cousin become a concubine for me?"

"What's wrong?" Old Madam Lin snorted coldly, displeased. "Is it too much for Yue'e to be your concubine? Don't just talk about being a concubine, even if she becomes your wife, she is still worthy of you."

Old Madam Lin's expression changed drastically upon hearing this. It was clear that Madam Li deliberately embarrassed her in front of everyone because of what happened last time.

Ouyang Zhi frowned and said, "I'm not talking about that. It's just..."

"Are you afraid my daughter-in-law won't agree? Is she unwilling to let others bear children for you just because she can't?" Old Madam Li questioned sharply.

Madam Lin was almost infuriated by this remark and was about to retort when Wang Mama rushed forward and grabbed her arm, forcibly suppressing the words she was about to blurt out.

Madam Lin had dismissed countless women who wanted to marry Ouyang Zhi over the past few years. However, this situation was different. It was bestowed by the Old Madam herself. If she didn't even give face in this matter as a daughter-in-law, how could she manage the Ouyang household? Despite Madam Lin's various attempts, she couldn't come up with a solution.

Meanwhile, Ouyang Nuan calmly lifted a teacup and took a sip of tea.

Ouyang Zhi was taken aback, glancing at Madam Lin's expression, he hurriedly said, "No, Wanru is not that kind of person." Madam Lin definitely wouldn't agree. Otherwise, he wouldn't have only two concubines after all these years. One was originally a maid, promoted to a concubine at his mother's discretion, and the other was a gift from his superior, which he couldn't refuse.

Old Madam Li's face grew even darker...

The situation couldn't be pushed too far, otherwise, if Madam Li truly regretted it, it would be a loss not worth the gain. Ouyang Zhi hurriedly smiled and said, "Son feels that making cousin a concubine would be unfair to her."

"As long as you understand that Yue'e feels wronged," Old Madam Li's expression softened slightly. She continued, "In the future, you must be more considerate and treat her well. Don't mistreat her."

With that settled, Li Yue'e blushed with embarrassment, while Madam Lin turned pale with anger.

Ouyang Nuan's expression remained as serene as a white pear blossom, her lips gently curved as if always carrying a smile. "Then from now on, I can't call you Auntie, I have to call you Aunt Li."

Two days later, when Ouyang Zhi and Madam Lin came to pay their respects at Li's residence, Li Yue'e specially wore a newly made snow-green jacket and skirt. Silver threads embroidered vine patterns on it, shimmering like flowing water and clouds, making her slender waist and graceful figure even more prominent.

Not to mention Ouyang Zhi, even Ouyang Ke, the young maiden, couldn't help but stare at the dazzling skirt. Feeling proud, Li Yue'e thought to herself that the satin sent by Miss Ouyang had an excellent color, and combined with the jewelry sent earlier, it made Madam Lin, who had already given birth, appear dim and lifeless.

She lingered around Ouyang Zhi, teasing him with her presence, making him feel enchanted but unable to reach out, increasingly itching and impatient.

Thus, she persuaded Madam Li to advance the date of her entry into Ouyang's household by half a month...
